E46 320d 6 speed and 5 speed, what ages?

Hey guys, probably going to get a 320d for a while as I'll have a mega commute for 18 months. The question is, when did they start on the 6 speeds?

I was told it was when the face lifted the e46 but I've seen an 04 facelift online with a 5 speed :/ confused.

That doesn't seem quite right!? Unless it is a 316ti as they were apparently always a 5 speed.

I thought all face-lifts were 6 speeds - my March 2004 320td was a 6 speed, but my September 2002 325ti is a 5-speed. My nephew has a June 2003 325ti facelift which is a 6 speed (got that wrong!).

If you want to be sure get the VIN number and put it into bmwarchive.com or similar....
