I had this exact situation with my 730d. The local dealer called me and told me that along with the oil change it was booked in for they recommended changing the filters (for just over £500 iirc, so an additional £320+). I declined and set about doing some research. In the end I got my local garage who I use to service my van (very cheap, very reliable) to change the parts and saved around £80, still using OEM parts.

The OEM filters are not cheap - you can get prices from BMW's eBay site so there's only the possibility of shaving some cost off the labour element (assuming the dealer isn't inflating the price of the parts which they often do as I experienced again only yesterday). If you're outside the warranty there are a few cheaper options though, if it were me, I'd keep OEM fuel & air filters and save a few quid on pattern pollen filters.

BTW the garage I used charged next to nothing to do the air & pollen filters as the were relatively easy jobs. The fuel filter was under the car (directly under the front passenger seat) and I didn't fancy doing that job myself hence the use of the garage.

It certainly doesn't appear to be with every oil change - and given oil changes are every 25k ish miles that's at least 50k on the same filters! Surely that cannot be right?
Is that an exaggeration or has it really taken 25k miles for the condition based service computer thing to ask for the oil to be changed?

Sorry for not answering any of your questions, but I'm considering a 535i or d and there's confusing information on the interweb on the oil change intervals.
Nope.

It is condition based servicing so if you drive it like a racing car maybe you'll need to change in 5k miles whereas if your sat on the m way 8 th gear smooth driving etc then it could be higher.

My previous E90 330d pre LCI servicing for oil changes flagged up between 18-24k miles (it changed due to my job changing).

Basically the idrive tells you when it's due and always tells you how long is left / based on the driving it has had to date.

It's actually pretty simple.

Every other oil service has the fuel and air filter changed as well.

So you get a cheap one then an expensive one then a cheap one then an expensive one. Your quote is compounded by it co-inciding with the Vehicle Check as well, which is a separate fixed distance based element.

Hi

After some advice - my car is due a service in a thousand miles so I went to BMW to see what it needed and a quote for the work.

Oil change
Vehicle check
Fuel filter
Oil filter
Air filter
Pollen filter

And it was apparently a special offer price £532 inc vat and a wash.

Does that sound right price wise ?

Also on the idrive it only shows oil and vehicle check not the other bits - though I'd assume that the oil filter and air filter would be changed at every oil service.

Seems pricy to me especially as the Vehicle check could find other stuff.
That does seem high. I've had to give up my new F30 330D because it's a saloon and we've just added another member of the family so there's not enough space. Swapped with the MD for his 2013 Mitsubishi Shogun plus a privately leased BP tanker to follow me behind everywhere. I've just popped it in to the main dealer today for it's second service with an insane quote of £660.82 but there is quite a few extras being done. Here's the breakdown they sent me in advance plus there's 3.5 hours labour at £75 ph.

OIL SEAL,ROCKER COVER £2.88 4 £11.52
OIL FILTER £13.13 1 £13.13
GASKET,THROTTLE BODY £9.04 1 £9.04
GASKET,ENG AIR INTAKE FITT £5.58 1 £5.58
GASKET,EGR PIPE £3.35 1 £3.35
GASKET,EGR PIPE £2.69 1 £2.69
FUEL FILTER £28.99 1 £28.99
AIR REFRESHER ASSY £18.83 1 £18.83
DOT 3 & 4 BRAKE & CLUTCH FLUID £4.19 1 £4.19
MULTILIFE C-THREE FULL SYNTHETIC 5W/30 £10.50 9.8 £102.90
HAZARDOUS WASTE DISPOSAL £5.00 1 £5.00
GASKET,LEVEL/DRAIN PLUG £2.16 1 £2.16
GASKET,O/DRAIN PLUG £0.99 1 £0.99
GASKET,ROCKER COVER £14.87 1 £14.87
GASKET, LEVEL - DRAIN PLUG £1.20 2 £2.40
OIL SEAL,ROCKER COVER £2.88 4 £11.52
ELEMENT,AIR CLEANER £48.99 1 £48.99
SCREEN WASH £2.03 1 £2.03

It's a 3.2 diesel hence the 9.8 litres of oil required.

My Z4 35iS was £300 for an oil change, filter + spark plugs. Bearing in mind I'm living in a place where the labour is £35 per hour official BMW rates!

Seems about right, although you could do it all yourself in an hour or two and just buy the bits and the oil - I think you change the oil and filter from the top of the engine, small pump will do!

Depends if you want the stamp and can be arsed.

"Cheap" in this context meaning less £ than the more expensive one I take it? :-D

Yes. The biggest problem the F10 has is the stupid microfilters - which not only cost a small fortune from the main dealer but are in contrast to the E39 now handily located in the dashboard or something which adds 30 minutes of labour to the cost, too. Sigh.

So an oil service is £150 but an oil service with microfilter is £274ish..

My 2014 530D had its first service yesterday. 20824 miles, 22 months old.

Service- std scope £16.30
Engine oil service- oil and filter £133.03
Micro filter service £119.56

Total £268.89

No VAT on the invoice because I wasn't charged as the car is on the Service scheme, £425 for the first 5 years. I'm guessing if it hadn't been it would have been £267 + VAT, about £320.

The cost of the microfilters themselves is shown as 1 pack of 2, £95.11 ex vat.

Considering the 3 year service pack for my imminent new F11 535d - covers it for 3 years/36,000 miles... So if these service intervals are typically 20,000 miles then I will only get one oil service for £399 before it runs out eek. Sounds like a rip-off - or am I missing something? Also I'm too old-school to think 20,000 miles on the same oil is good for it and am likely to do an interim one myself.

They wont quote for an oil service online (bizarrely) but they will quote £179 for my E61...I smell a rat!

^^^^^

I think you'll get a minor service (oil and filter) and a brake fluid service.

Wow - oil and brake fluid is £250 on the E61 'value' plan (although I DIY)...

If it smells like a rat...and looks like a rat?!

I think the oil quantity is 7.5l and the BMW filters are made by Mahle. Main dealers usually allow you to supply your own oil as long as it's LL04 and on the approved list. Check the camcover breather pipe (front of the engine on the turbo side, ribbed black plastic) for leaks.

Not being funny but try Kwik Fit, they mot my car every year, I recently got a quote for full service 525d F10, cost just over £200 this included oil,oil filter, fuel filter, air filter and full vehicle check, breaks, suspension , electrics, tyres etc etc.
I believe its great value and I can get an oil and oil filter change every other 10k miles for £130.

Having read about BMW's approach to contributions to non warranty repairs many times I think you have to balance the known cost of getting FBMWSH over FVatPaidButBackStreetSH against the potential cost of big bill repairs needing a generous contribution from BMW. I'm probably jinxing mine now but the extra cost of FBMWSH doesn't feel like a good deal on that basis.

The new service pack sucks and I can't understand the value proposition of it. As you say you end up with one oil service, and its a minor one too with just the micro-filters as its the first one.

You can get it to quote prices if you enter an incorrect reg, it'll let you access to the drop down box to manually select your model.

Glad I managed to get my pack purchased just before they changed it and got 5 years/50k miles (Which itself was a downgrade from the original 60k mile limit which all but guaranteed 3 services out of the pack).
