I'm in a dilemma folks.

Current spec 420d m sport with metallic paint, sports paddles, rear seat heating for 2 years lease

I've been offered the 430d for only £462 more over the life, however I lose the rear seat heating otherwise identical spec. If I add the heating it'll cost me over £1k due to the silly way the finance works. It will recalculate based on current residual figures rather than this locked in rate from a month ago.

What to do? Is the extra outlay worth it. Rear seat heating would be nice for kids!
462 more? I'm failing to see the dilemma here.
£20 a month for a 430 over a 420? There certainly is no dilemma and you don't sit in the back. The kids will be fine!!

Guys, I am getting impatient with work as they can't tell me whether or not I will get this car allowance now and can only tell me any time between now and the end of March. If I do get it, I will probably go all out (440i M Sport Coupe).

But I have been offered the below and I am tempted to bite the bullet now, thoughts?

420i M Sport 5dr Auto Gran Coupe [Professional Media][2016.25]
£3,253.07 inc VAT initial rental
£361.45 inc VAT per month
20k miles p/a
As my previous reply. Keep the bullet unbitten.

Agree and I also didn't realise you could get heated rear seats in the 4 series so everyday is a school day.

I failed to mention the 14 week reset. So I'll lose the two months I've already waited, lose rear heated seats and pay £462 more...

...but being a guy, I like the 6 cylinder and performance upgrade so I just got off the call and accepted biggrin I think it's worth the wait! 430d is different beast to the 20d

What dilemma??!!!

Silky smooth 3 litre straight six vs a horrible 4cyl for £462 more.

And heated rear seats? Seriously??
I mean I have them, but I tend to sit in the front so don't give a st! Never an option I would tick unless buying a LWD 7 series or S Class.

To be fair though, I would rather a 2 litre BMW than a 3 litre Audi or VW or something.

Many simply want the best MPG possible and the lowest possible BIK tax too, then it comes down to what car you like driving that matches that criteria.

Our X3 is the 20d, it works well for what it is meant to do, but if I had know I was going to like the X3 as much as I have done, I would have bought the 6cyl.
But getting 700 miles from some tanks, from a 2 tonne AWD SUV from a £60 fill up does remind me why we bought the 20d, but I would rather get 400 miles and have the 35d. wink

Wife has a 220d and I have a 430d- the difference is night and day. I get about 40mpg in mixed driving. I do like Sports+ mode though. On a decent run I get around 48mpg

The kids can go cold. It's all about me!
Genuinely excited now, 430d will be awesome. I see lots of 20d and I ordered it purely for economy too, but I'm happy to sacrifice a little for better responsiveness and a much better sounding engine

When I had my 520d Touring I just couldn't stand its engine so was very happy to get rid of it, but now I miss its practicality and it drove fine too and I know if I had gone for the 530d instead I would still have it now.

Exactly this...

I've had 330Ci's, 535d, X5 30d & 40d, 550i and now on my second N47. I have to confess, it's exceptionally good at what it does. Yes, it's a bit noisier than a 6-cylinder (but then I'd never describe the 6-cylinder derv as "silky smooth" either) and there's no comparison with the N62 550i, but it does 95% of what I need every day very effectively indeed and with fuel consumption figures I could only dream of in my other cars.

Like Giz, I didn't realise how much I'd like the X3 either, so maybe might've looked at the 6-cylinder but the N47 is certainly no hardship.

It is if you have had other engines to compare it to though, and I can say with complete confidence that the N47 is a pretty poor engine apart from the fact that it is very frugal.

You have had some similar engines to me looking at your history so I do find it hard to understand how you can rate it because it's the worst BMW engine I have experienced by a long shot.

Don't get me wrong, I loved my other cars, but perhaps I'm at a stage now that without the N47 I wouldn't be running BMWs. Unfortunately for me, mpg is one of the higher priority considerations now and the N47 allows me to have my cake an eat it to an extent which wouldn't be possible with the 6 & 8-cylinders I've had previously.

That was a bit similar to me and we ran a E90 330d and a E61 520d for a while both together and the 330d returned around 43mpg and the 520d was only doing around 44/45 mpg, so it taught me that in some cases it can be false economy actually going for the smaller engine.

I know you can get mid 50`s mpg out of a 116d so I suppose in that application it can be worth while.
