insurance is really only to fulfill the mandatory requirements rather than fix my car to a standard I expect rather than down to a cost to make an insurance company a decent margin.
That's the deal pretty much across the industry in my view. Claimed 5 years ago (hit while parked) = fault claim. Cost of repair £1500. Cost of my increased premiums over the next 5 years having to declare the fault claim = almost exactly £1500. Why bother claiming in the first place, then having to fight the insurer for good repair etc etc.

A-Plan via the BMW Car Club: "The cheapest is over £2000, sir.".

AF: "£312, sir.".

Mind you, in the past, a renewal quote from another insurer: £9,900. What was this carnage-inducing monster? A Citroen 1.9D!!!

Had a comedy quote from Flux for the V12 - still chuckling as paid a third for a superb policy with the club approved insurer.

My renewal tactic is to ensure you use a comparison site when you get your existing insurer renewal quote. This pings up with them (if they are on the site) so when you call them to politely ask if they can beat your best comparison site quote they often will get close. This works with LV which is a very solid company to have as an insurer. Ohh and NEVER EVER have auto renew on.
