Worried me that the insurance guy said 'you'd be surprised how common this is!'
Have you replaced it with another of the same?

You need to settle finance before even thinking of another car, the insurance company pay finance co with the owner settling the difference directly to finance company- you then get a discharge letter absolving you on any further liability
So in the event of a total loss the customer potentially gets screwed by HAVING to repay even though they may have years left on the agreement.
They should make this absolutely clear to customers because it sounds like GAP insurance is essential on cars bought on Finance or PCP.

I'd be very surprised if GAP wasn't offered. I had to almost physically fight off the salesmen from the last two cars I've bought for pressuring me into buying GAP. I didn't bother as I was buying with cash and happy taking the risk. But the point I'm making is that BMW will most certainly push this product and, in any event, it is part of the finance docs that you will be made aware of the benefits/pitfalls of buying or declining the GAP insurance when you are taking out a finance product and have to sign to that effect. Hell, I had to even sign to confirm I was aware of that even though I was buying cash!

To the OP - I certainly feel for you. Car looks like a right mess and really quite shocking.

I presume this happened early on in the ownership of the car in order to produce that mismatch between finance outstandings & insurance value?

Sounds like you got off lightly with 6k (or you got a very good deal when you bought it).

Seriously though - good luck with the next one. Either of those would be a very fine choice of car IMO. smile

The way you worded it made it sound like you had. I was going to say you were either very brave or very foolish wink

What did you replace it with?
