I'm looking at buying a 640D as I am doing a lot of motorway miles now after starting a new job. I was hoping some owners could give me some advice with a few queries I had on the car.

What sort of real world MPG do you get on long journeys?
Has anyone fitted a tow bar to one?
Are there any must have options? Or is most of the stuff standard? I'd be looking at a 2013-2014 car.
Does the M sport pack add anything except for the better alloys?

My other option is a 435d, has anyone had experience of the two and can offer a comparison?

Cheers

No tow bar factory option or any of the the usual fitters like Witter etc. Shame as I quite fancied a 640\650 GC.

I've got a GC nearly a year old with 15k on it.
MPG is averaging at 42 mixture of 45 mins motorway 10mins B road. Long runs are high 40's, pushing 50mpg for a 70mph run I tend to stick the cruise on at 78mph which gets you around 47.

A lot of spec is standard I wouldn't say there are any must have options but options that help the car retain its value I would say the MSPORT plus pack which consists of the 20" wheels, Head up display, LCD dash and harmon Kardon stereo. This was the options when I bought my pre lci 640D, I think the LCD dash is standard now but you're looking at 2013/14 cars so that doesn't apply. I also have rear camera and the surround view which helps with parking the thing which is just over 5 metres long plus speed limit display. Not must haves but certainly nice to haves. The HUD is very useful and something I'll opt for in my next car.
Some people opt to spend the cash on the Electronic damper control (EDC) to soften the ride due to big wheels and run flats but it's not something that bothered me.
Lots of kit as standard heated electric memory seats (lumber support is not standard though)pro nav (upgraded around 2013 so watch out for that) electric heated folding mirrors etc.

The 435d handles a little better only because it's smaller, the 6 is a large car and you can feel it in the bends when pushing on but if you use it mostly for motorway I would choose the 6 as it's a lot smoother and quieter.

Edit - any excuse to post a pic.....

Ah this could be my only problem with the car - I need to be able to tow my motorbike. I'll ring my local tow bar place as they are usually pretty good at fitting tow bars to cars that don't actually have them as an option - I had one on my S3 and that wasn't approved to tow.

Thanks for that thumbup

If I can get over 40 average I'll be happy - I just didn't want the claimed figures to be miles away from the real world. I'll be doing at least 2 220 mile trips a week which is 95% motorway, so I am leaning towards the 6 series. I also think it looks better than the 4 but that's subjective.

What is the difference between the pro nav and normal one? The main thing I want is the traffic updates, does the normal one still have that?

The traffic updates are standard on the 640d, we have covered 40k miles in ours since November 2014 and it has a lovely interior and it looks great to my eyes too.

Got the 20 inch rims and have swapped the run flats for normal tyres and it's made a massive difference to the ride and overall feel of the car, it has returned around 41mpg as well which is impressive for its weight and size and the performance it offers.

I went into Sytner Nottingham September 2014 to get a 435d Coupe and walked out buying a new 640d Coupe.

Issues with the 435d at the time - monthly PCP was similar due to need lots more extras, suspension looks silly (SE suspension on the M Sport and the discount on the 640 was epic

Real world consumption... I've averaged 39.7mpg over 16k miles, best is around 51mpg on a long 150mile 70mph run. Worst in the 20's when doing a cold day 3-5 mile journey.

As above get the M Sport pack which I didn't and I'm really annoyed about - wasn't advised to do it frown

I'm about to retro fit the multi function instrument panel though...

Great cars, but such limited rear space, so if you need rear space take a look at the 435 as it has much more room or take a look at the Gran Coupe.

Well lets hope your 640d coupes and gc's don't end up like mine..... if I was you I would do no electrical work yourself and leave it to the dealer too, this was the result of a wrongly installed and configured CAS unit by a certain bmw dealer

All of them have Pro Nav.

With 2 x 220 mile trips per week you should easily see mid 40's.

Traffic updates known as RTTI are standard in the car for 3-4 years then there is a license fee applicable.

Works great and I really like the RTTI functionality.

Spotify also integrates reasonably well into the nav too.

Marvellous connectivity, but F*ck-all use when the car decides spontaneous combustion is a better idea - connected to a bonfire is not generally a move forward IMHO! Or did I miss something?

Still I suppose you can tell everyone you have ever known that your car is on fire!

I did 70k over 3 years in my 6GC and averaged over 40. A long quiet motorway run below 80 should see you nearer 50. Can be a bit weather dependant.

Options, think they're all largely personal taste and not essential. The pack with hud, hifi etc is good but not sure when that became an option. The roof some people like but I never used mine. Rear camera surround view thing proved useful as the car is big. The suspension (think it's VDC) some like, I had adaptive drive which was even more costly, but hardly ever changed setting. I'm running regular springs in my current car (different make) and can't say I'm missing it. Soft close doors.. Nice, leather dash and contrasting stitch is nice, comfort access.. Nice.. LED light... Nice. cornering lights.. Nice. They're all nice.. But not essential. Worth noting the standard hifi was the same as the first level of upgrade on the 5 (think it was called business hifi or something) so slightly better than the usual standard fit.

I think you'll be looking at one of the many ex lease cars and they'll be fairly light on extra spec, but there are loads of then around so just find the one you like. GC prices have started to soften and it's said to be the better car. 30k might get you a half decent car.

They're a lot of car and I'd probably be in one if I hadn't spent half of the last 3 years in one.

I have owned my 640d m sport on a 17 plate for 2 weeks now and my average mpg is 40 mpg on the computer.

However today on my way to work 38 miles mainly motorway I managed 54mpg albeit the m4 was 50mph most of my journey in eco pro.

Superb economy from such a powerful car.
