This is basically what my garage quoted me for; break the engine break the bank basically. Will feedback on the quote from Technosport but won't be for a while as I'm travelling the next few weeks.

Just phoned Technosport, very knowledgeable guys with a very good reputation from everything I've read. They said typically they'd replace the seals, stems, recut the seats and sort the valleys - basically a full top end rebuild. Not holding them to the price as it's not a quote, just a ball park idea, but they said you'd be looking at around £3,000 all in.

Tbh, it's more than some people claim to have paid (some claiming around £1,500 - £2,000 at garages in the North of England), but Technosport are a class act if their customer base are anything to go by.

I guess Munich Legends may be another indie to consider, but from what I've read they're barely cheaper than BMW themselves, who quoted a ball park of £5k.

My 750 (2005/e65) is only worth around £5-6k, so spending £2k+ doesn't make financial sense. I really should stop being lazy and just get the Aga tool, as I have a heated garage and I can live with the car being off the road as long as I need. Just don't fancy the back-ache of leaning over it for hours on end.

I would highly recommend the AGA tool. Imported one to do my 650i valve seals. The job took a couple of weekends to complete, as its a fairly involved job. The fact that you don't have to remove the engine/heads and re-time the engine is a big bonus. Its a bit awkward replacing the rear seals, but not impossible.

The tool itself is very easy to use. Recommend some long bent nose pliers to remove the valve seals, some of them were a right pain to remove. I also replaced the coolant transfer pipe at the same time, which was on its way out. I would suggest removing the inlet manifold even if you are not replacing the coolant transfer pipe just for ease of access.

Purchasing and importing the tool cost me around £800 in total. Doing the job myself obviously saved a big wad of cash and once I have sold my tool, the job only really cost me the valve seals and beer, lots and lots of beer.

What I thought was valve stem oil seals on my 550 turned out to be a score in the bore of cylinder no.5, so I have had a new block put it. It ended up working out the same as getting the existing block re-.

Is there a pattern as to what mileages these seals typically need doing?

eliot has said his 750 has 115k miles.

I think around the 100k mark. Mine has got worse in the last 7k miles.

I've bought the aga tool from the James who posted above, so I'll be doing this work myself shortly.

Well I'm now the proud owner of the AGA tool and have ordered the replacement seals, so I'll be keeping you updated with progress on this job.

Update for those who are interested - I've completed 3 out of 4 cylinders on the offside bank using the tool. I purchased a USB endoscope camera for the rear bank which i couldn't even see.

Final Update - car back on the road and now SMOKE FREE!!! The work took about 4-5 days, spread over a few weeks as I had several busy weekends with other commitments. The nearside (cylinders 5-8) were far easier to do as the access is better. I replaced the offside upper timing cover seal, vanos soleniod and vacuum pump o-rings which are common problems too.

The tool is available for rent or sale if anyone needs it.

Facebook link above still works - just rent the tool. Strip the car down ready on both sides ahead of renting the tool.

I've read that BMW updated these to a later type which last longer. Does anyone know when they changed?

Indeed it would be nice to know - as i would actively avoid cars made in the "bad" years if I ever buy another. Mine was 2005 - so at least cars up to that point.
