I just got back into one, went from 2007 635d to a 2012 640d, then 6 months in a 530i E39 and last week back to a 635d 2009 facelift.

They are fantastic cars, and great value. They feel more solid and a sportier drive than the newer 640d.

These are having the Bentley Continental effect on me. I was looking at the 640d but I think I prefer the looks and interior of the 635d.

Had my eye on a couple of Azurite black individual spec with mileage below 60k and both went before I could get there to view. Now playing the waiting game for a facelift car with below 60k, azurite black with cream interior individual spec, as due to age a lot of the higher mileage cars look abit tatty around the edges (particularly the leather) as expected and rather wait for a decent car if I'm going to be paying a the top end of the market.

Biggest trade-off compared to the 640d for me is maybe the infotainment being dated, but see you can get apple car play installed now which resolves that issue.

After 10 months and 18k miles back in mine i still love this car!

I over service it (every 4k miles) as the filters and oil are cheap enough and its high miles. Mine is touching 200k miles now and will get a full gearbox service next week.

I think they are a nice mix of old school "heavier steering" BMW with some modern features, especially the facelift 2009 on models with the newer sat nav etc. The drive is nicer than the 640d for me anyway.

The interior is a really nicely built, solid and comfortable design. The only negative I can think of is the standard stereo sound quality. I think Logic7 may have been the premium option but I've not heard it.

340+bhp (remapped)
40+ mpg on the motorway
Stylish looks
Bags of torque
Nice steering wheel with high quality shift paddles
Sport button actually makes it feel different to drive
They even have a big boot!

Has anyone run one on winter tyres? That's my next purchase

Interior quality wise, I think the quality is up there with the best for the money. Beaten by the likes of the 2010 on Merc CL, and Panamera which would be my replacement car of choice if I could afford one!

Picked mine up yesterday and think its great for the money! Better than my previous 4-series especially in terms of build quality and presence. Engine is smooth and sounds decent for a diesel.

Going to install apple car play, detailed and leather refurbed with steering wheel retrim. Replace any trim items which are showing wear.

Carbon Schwarz?

Mines pretty much the same with black leather and carpets.

Had an LCI 635d convertible for a couple of years - very well put together car and a great cruiser.

The drive felt like an occassion and it was great roof up or down - the function to lower all windows and the rear "butress" style windbreak was cool with roof up - pillerlass cruising..

Being a soft top though it did have some scuttle shake and this was only emphasied by the runflats - had I kept the car they would have been replaced.

Now in a 640d coupe and the comparisons are as others have said - however for me the drive it better than the 635 simply due being more solid without the scuttle shake. The gearbox in the 635d was the only item which dated it compared the 640's rapid changes.

Looks wise - i prefer the 635 at the front and the 640d at the rear - both cars are ageing well though and still hold great road presence!

Would anyone say 400-450 miles from a full tank is about right with 50/50 town and m’way?

Got carplay installed and updated clock lights.

I’d say that’s pretty good, I get 500-600 regularly 90% motorway, if you drive super sensible it goes up, I’ve had 600+ out of a tank which I find incredible, considering the performance.

Thanks guys, much appreciated.

Sounds like its got some potential issues and is going to be an expensive car to run over big mileage?
The more I see them though, the more I fancy getting one!

What about driving them on ice and snow? Are they a nightmare unless its on winter tyres?

MHM
I had a F31 330d and then went to a 640d GC, the 6 was awful in snow but the 3 was no problem.

The 6 also self destructed by letting a big end bearing go at just under 100k miles. All covered by warranty but was told the bill was in excess of £20k.

Fuel wise I would regularly get low 50's mpg on long runs. Overall average was 42.1mpg.

Insurance can be high. I paid £550 for the first 3 years in the 6 but last year they wanted to put it up to nearly £1500 so I sold it and bought a Skoda Karoq but this has now been replaced with an iX3.

Agree about them being awful in the snow
