I just don't understand this. People who don't know anything about cars won't care or even notice, those that do know about them will have a bit of a chuckle. Bet he feels a right prat when he pulls up next to a real M5.

What's so funny is that is exactly what happened a couple of months ago. I parked in the town square at Stonehaven just as this guy was walking back to his car and he scuttled off really quickly (well as fast as his 'M5' would go)... He looked really embarrassed. Now I see it parked at the other end of my street!!!

What's really odd is that it's actually a 540 which is a nice car and top of the E39 range of non M cars, so why not leave it badged correctly and just enjoy your 4.4 litre V8 as it is?

At the end of the day, the fella probably can't afford an M5 or its running costs. He's adapted his car to what suits him. Is he doing me any harm ? Nope.

Is he doing anyone else any harm ? Nope.

Some people have a few quid, and some don't. Some people stick M badges all over their car, so what ?

Back in the day, a fibreglass whip aerial was the epitomy of cool ( I st thee not) but we couldn't all afford BDA Escorts, so we made ours look as close as.

Basically because we were constantly skint. Why kick a man when he is doing what he can, within the budget he has, to make his car how he wants it ? It might look st, but hey! It makes him happy !

Point taken, but it was a decent car to begin with and he must accept fairly high running costs as it won't be great on fuel as a 1.8 tonne 4.4 V8 auto that also has a healthy appetite for tyres, suspension, brake consumables etc...

I'd be happy to have a 540 without trying to dress it up as something else. As said previously anybody not knowledgeable about cars won't care, those that do will see it isn't one straight away and as the owner, you'd always know it wasn't the real deal...

The mods are fine if he likes them but putting the M5 badge on the back marks you out as a complete tit.

But what if his favourite car in the world is an e39 M5 circa £7-20 grand, but he is not so well off and can just about get into a 540i? Cause he has kids/ mortgage/crappy job/ maybe a leg missing so he can't drive a manual. And you have just ripped his pride and joy on a public website.

On another note! I saw what I believe to be a genuine e39 M5 guessing by the brakes/wheels/ the quick glance of the interior as it rumbled by.... With some sort of exhaust modification to allow lots of lovely V8 rumble out.... Fitted with a tow bar!! That, I thought was genuinely cool!

I have to agree, I find it far more cringeworthy that people feel the need to take the juice out of someone else's car. It done well and he has probably enjoyed doing it, fair play to the guy.

The worst bit is the number plate. If you lived in Scotland surely you would want to hide the fact!!

tongue out Sorry, couldn't resist!

+1. Frankly I'd rather have a 540i with an M5 badge than many of the small so called M cars but they don't get laughed at, though perhaps some of them should.

Must say BMW have done a great job of marketing a letter as a brand; you certainly can fool some of the people etc......

I was in my M5 at some traffic lights and a guy in a (525i/530i) pulled alongside with some of his M5 additions, he actually gave me a thumbs up.

Clearly he is a fan of BMW and likes cars and is doing the best he can afford to do.

agree. Car snobbery at its best. Especially with PCP its so cheap to get into a new car for a few months - so what? It can take more cash/time to keep an older car running in good order and that shows passion for the marque imo.

OP no offense intended I'm sure you're a nice guy and maybe its just me but i'd feel a bit weird/creepy taking photos of someones car like this. Don't mess with another man's automobile! smile

confused I have to say that's one of the oddest comments I've read on this forum, what is a so called M car?

I'm no BMW badge snob (some will argue that with what I'm going to post next), but don't try and claim your car is something it's not!

Had this 540i simply had an ///M badge on the boot then that would be fair enough as far as I'm concerned, but putting an ///M5 badge on it, whilst not the end of the World - As some on here seem to make it out to be, is a bit sad!

Life is short. Whatever makes people happy is fine with me as long as it isn't harming anyone else. He's even given cause for a chuckle or two on this forum! Good on him I say!

Slightly off topic, there is a chap lives on my street who has owned an e39 M5 for years. I don't know how he has managed it (as my car hasn't as much as a scratch on it) but I reckon there isn't a single panel which isn't either carrying a dent or two and several scratches. Still sounds and looks fab to my eyes, but I'm sure some others would be horrified!!

It's pretty harmless and something I'm sure I've been guilty of as a younger man. I'm sure I had one of those super rare E21 M323i back in the 90's. laugh

I still hope to one day find the PH'er who accosted me at a petrol station on the A3 and asked me ''Why would you stick M badges on an old 3 series like that?'' before wandering off shaking his head.

The old 3 series.
