Just a quick heads up to other PHers regarding possible VANOS solenoid issues on E90 series N5* series engines.

Last year my 2006 N54 335i developed an occasional fault that resulted in the car going limp mode. There had to be two specific conditions in place before the fault would occur; the oil had to be fully up to temperature and the car would need to be accelerating from low revs in a higher gear.

Given the known N54 fuel system issues I assumed something to do with either HPFP, coil packs or injectors. Internet research and having the codes read suggested VANOS solenoids instead so I've just had the inlet and exhaust solenoids cleaned and checked. Car feels far fitter now and no limp mode since.

There are several threads online about the subject and there's a video here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rkr79T6yHKk

Fault code for mine was 2A82 ( sticking intake solenoid ) but that issue can happen with exhaust side too. Fault code is 2A87 for exhaust.

Here is another shorter video carried out on a 335i. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YA8VUHPC-dU

New solenoids are approx. £85 each.
