My 57 plate had a camchain recall, might be worth checking if this has been done

If it's a manual, clutch judder and dual mass flywheel noise.

Good luck!

I sold my 123d SE Dynamic 2 years ago (at 81K miles) when everyone was aware of cam-chain issues but BMW wouldn't pick up the tab! (Even though mine was a pre-reg + 1 owner car).

Cam-chain is at the rear of the engine so a fix requires the engine out, and early N47s sometimes need a new crankshaft - cost with no goodwill is in the region of £8K - someone on here scrapped his because it wasn't an economic repair! (Before BMW "decided" to honour their commitments).

Personally if you cannot find evidence of the cam-chain issue having been sorted I would walk away (very quickly) - POS!

Mine also had a new battery and starter motor (probably a result of the Co2 "cheating" stop/start b*llocks).

I only have straight 6 naturally aspirated petrol engines in my BMs these days - so much better, and less grief!

But if you do go down the tractor route please be careful what you get!

I should add that they remap very well, mine was making 260-270 hp which is pretty impressive for a 2 litre derv.

How do you know it was making between 260-270bhp bud? This isn't a trick question but I'm curious as you don't seem sure of the number.

Here's my 2p worth as a BMW owner...

Get the fault codes read from the car by someone with the correct gear, you want to check things like the regeneration history of the DPF, make sure that the DPF is actually there! Some owners just fit a pipe, and this is an MOT failure now I believe.
Check the wear patterns on the tyres, if it has run-flats they can go on the inner edges of the rear tyres and the outer edges of the fronts, also check that they are decent tyres, as the brand of tyre fitted to a cr gives a very big clue as to how it has been looked after.

The timing chain issue as the others have said was down to a production fault on the crank-shaft where the timing gear was machined in as part of the actual shaft, the case hardening of these gears wasn't done properly and it chews up the lower timing chain. There was a recall done to rectify this, and a work collegue got a brand new engine out of it for his 2007 car. If the work has been done, check the engine numbers and if it is all good happy days.

I do tend to warm my 330d through carefully before giving it any boost, and let the engine idle for at least 45 seconds before shutting it down to cool the turbo, I am still on the original unit at 152K. If this is a private sale see how the owner drives it, big throttle openings on a cold engine, walk away!

Personally because I am a fuss arse I would get an inspection done for total peace of mind, it could be the best couple of hundred quid you ever spend.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

It was an ecotune map and dpf delete (before that became bad form!), several cars with that set up have been tested and make those figures, I never bothered testing mine but it was night and day compared to the standard set up, non runflats and bilstein sportline made a big difference to the ride / handling as well.

OP, just a thought but you really should try a 130i if you can before you commit to a 123d - if I had I would have bought the 130i and f*ck the economy! The N52 3 litre petrol engine is fantastic (I know that now I have a Z4 Coupe).

But good luck whatever you go for!
