Don't be put off by the scare stories you read on the internet about these. Chances are almost all N53s are sorted now with upgraded coil packs, injectors and fuel pumps.

I bought a 2008 E91 330i N53 LCI as an AUC from Sytners 2 years ago with 8K on the clock, and am the second owner. It wasn't until I had owned the car for a few months that the issue of HPFPs and Injectors came to my attention.

When I took the car back to Sytners a few months later for an MOT, I politely enquired if I could have info on the car's service history from new, and they curtly declined citing the Data Protection Act rolleyes and that my stamped up service book should be enough for me! As I was only there to take up my free MOT provided as part of the sale, I decided not to push the matter any further and departed their service department vowing never to return. I then wrote to the original owner, enclosing an SAE, asking if they still had any service receipts etc, or failing that, any info they could let me have on unscheduled repairs, but I never heard back.

Does anyone know if there is another way I can try to obtain this info please?

That's a bit odd. My e92 had full sytner covernty service history. I rang them when I bought the car and spoke to the service manager. He was happy to tell me everything but would not send me printed confirmation as it contained the previous owners name and address. That was the only data protection issue.

You only want to know about the car and not the previous owner. You should have every right to that information.

Quite so, especially since the previous owner/keeper details are on the V5 anyway! Further, I'm sure it's quite technically possible to withhold previous keeper details from printed computer records if they really were that obsessed with customer confidentiality. To my thinking, it's more about protecting their own image should any vehicle suggest a less than glamorous history that they would rather keep under wraps.

Now that I have learned the hard way, in future, no supplying dealership will ever get my hard earned again unless they first come clean with documentary evidence of a vehicles past. Service books these days are practically worthless it seems.

I shall email them and ask if they could at least let me know if any work has ever been carried out to the injectors/hpfp/coil packs so that at least I can be more prepared. I am not quite so worried about costs in that regard presently, as I have always renewed the BMW warranty. But as the car is now nearly 8 years old, I may not wish to keep renewing it indefinitely and the added peace of mind of knowing the car already had modified components would be most welcome.

I've had this before. If the documents aren't with the car, it's hard to get them.

Of the cars I've bought from dealers I was lucky with mine in that in one case the previous owner had left receipts in the document folder which weren't immediately obvious.

I've traded a car in with a file of receipts and invoices, which were promptly binned.....ironically, if you want a proper full history, like most people do, then it seems you're better off buying private.
