Hey all.

535d is due a service. 2 years old, 64,000 miles.

Needs an Oil Service (plus air filter, microfilter and fuel filter) and an Vehicle Inspection.

Been quoted ALMOST SEVEN HUNDRED QUID! And guess what, they refuse to let me supply my own (LL04) oil....

Er, wut?

Is this right?

Seems like its time to find a good independent specialist, and get the car off of longlife servicing and CBS rubbish.

Directly from BMW UK's service page shows it as a fair bit less, £561 (including hooking it up to reset service indicators/errors @ £19.61 additional compulsory cost).

Their only get out is that they are possible not a "participating retailer". My thoughts are they are chancing their arm...

That is very pricey for sure and I am gutted the service pack on the 640d is ending in 4k miles now as it looks like the servicing costs are going to be high going on what you've been quoted.

Indy for me next then but you are still under warranty though if it's only 2 years old so I understand why you will still use main dealer.

I used to get my M5 serviced by Elms Cambribge, never had any problem supplying my own oil and it usually ended being 40% cheaper than the exact same stuff they'd supply.

So what are the overall service costs over 60odd K miles? Is it really that bad? What could you have bought instead, that would have been cheaper to run but comparable in other ways?

Genuine Microfilters are £84, with the carbon canister they are £114, overall not really much in that one for a dealership (and personally having my head in the passenger footwell looking up is worth it IMO)

Block exemption rule- get it serviced at an indie using all the correct oils and parts etc and save yourself a fortune whilst keeping within warranty.
