Anyone ever used the SOS button that is in the roof console?
Curious to know what happens, do they know your location when you call them? can they call the police for you? etc

Yes, I've used it once or twice.

It goes straight through to BMW Assist. If you require the emergency services, then they dial it for you and pop you through; otherwise they deal with whatever you need that they can help with. In theory, if BMW Assist is activated (120quid subscription p.a. after initial 3yr free period) then a significant crash (i.e. sensors telling the car it's crashed) will activate the Emergency Services Response automatically, together with GPS Location - but I've heard of situations where it's not happened. But this could be down to a number of things - 3G signal, damage to comm boxes etc.

I've only ever used it if I've broken down and they've been very helpful and put me straight through to BMW Emergency Services (roadside assist) who've come out very quickly.

What happens if you have no "subscription"? e.g. a used car?

On that note I wonder if a dealer would be able to code in to just call 999 and send the gps co-ords?

I was under the impression that if you had a phone connected via Bluetooth, the car would still dial emergency services.

I test it once a year, quick press on a Sunday morning, confirm system work's ok & then bid them goodbye.

Doesn't go through to 999, just BMW who can they assist you on whatever it is your SOS'd about.

I had a tyre pressure warning light come on so didn't use the SOS button but did use the BMW Assist. They worked out where I was parked; I had just flown back from Aberdeen to Birmingham, it was late at night, pouring with rain and dark so wasn't entirely sure of my exact location.

They tried to track down a replacement tyre (255,35,19 runflat) but couldn't find one locally late at night so put me on a low loader all the way back home.

Was very impressed with the service provided.

My 09 E91 has that button, presumably deactivated/unsubscribed long ago.

For now it acts as a "behave or i'll press the emergency button" threat to keep the kids in check.

Always been curious if it would do anything in my E90, but not enough to press the button, just in case smile

dont be frightened of pressing the button - nothing terrible will happen and it will let you know what happens. Just be courteous and explain that you are testing the button and thank them for assisting. Its good to know what to expect.

I do it once a year just to make sure its all up and works.
