What to look out for when buyng a 1 series ~ 118?
Discussion
My daughter wants me to go along with her when she looks at a second hand 1 series. She has seen one in Essex which looks to be an ex hairdressers car ie cabriolet with white seats !!!??? Anyway what are the weak spots and things likely to have failed that I should look out for or ask about?
I think the one she has seen is a 2010 and if not that particular car then that is the sort of age of vehicle that she is looking at.
Any pointers most appreciated.

Well to continue your clichés, perhaps you should be looking for fake tan marks on the white seats...I think the one she has seen is a 2010 and if not that particular car then that is the sort of age of vehicle that she is looking at.

Sorry it's more bad news OP, but the N47 Diesel engines in facelift models (early 07 onwards) have cam-chain issues too (try searching N47 Quality Enhancement)!
Having said that plenty of owners have had no problems - my N47-engined 123d managed over 80,000 miles without any cam-chain issue.

I think it is a petrol she is after but all noted on the timing chains. I come from a long line of BMWs e30/e34/e39/e46 and assume the "N" moniker is denotes the 1 series cars. Does anyone know when the timing chain issues were rectified. She was looking at an 2009/10 I believe.
Is that the only issue?
Thank you to all.

We have a 59 plate 118d 133k on the clock seems ok.
I think the chain issue was 'fixed' in 2009 as I asked about the 'quality enhancement"and was told ours was not effected.
We had a 116i 2009 model (2.0l engine apparently) petrol for a year 33k on the clock and the chain was very noisy.
If you get a diesel bear in mind they have DPF filters, they get clooged up if being driven round town. I take ours that does mainly town driving on a long run every week just to get the dpf cleaned out.
They are great little cars. Try and make sure you get both keys when you get a 1 series an a spare can be expensive.
I'd avoid the es models as they have no climate control (manual dial)
