Hi folks,

My wife has the above, 218d sport (with upgraded bits) as the family wheels and it's been great. However, it's too tall for me to get bikes on comfortably as I usually pop them on the roof. So I'm looking at a tow bar mount.

However, BMW are quoting silly money for a towbar, anyone know how easy it is to fit one to these? In an ideal world I'd have the bikes inside the car but I need the interior space for when we go camping, the idea of this car is that it's the do it all car so would like to have the option of chucking the bikes on the back.

If you have a good relationship with the dealer, then see if you can find out who they subcontract their towbar work to.

In my experience (having had 3 x towbars fitted to various BMWs) the dealer Subs out the work to local caravan or towbar installers and then charges a 100% markup on it.

Realistically, for BMW-specific electrics (don't go generic as they won't talk to the ESP and parking sensors) and a detachable OEM spec towbar (Westfalia or Witter) you shouldn't be paying more than 500quid.

If you're based in Essex or nearby, I can recommend Essex Towbars who come to your house and fit.

Otherwise try local Caravan Dealers since they either fit them themselves or will Sub to local boys.

BUMP UP... anybody know if I should get a removable or fixed swan neck on a "nearly new" gran tourer we're getting to cart the kids around in. I'll only use it for bike carriers, but am not worried about the aesthetics of a people carrier! The car comes with OEM parking sensors.

I've booked a company to do it already, but need to confirm fixed or removable ASAP.

Anyone got any experience on whether a removable is needed?
