Insurance to me is an afterthought. It clouds my judgement lol At least you're organised. It also depends on your age where increasing engine size can dramatically affect your quote

£200 more a year is hardly worth worrying about. The extra fun and ease you get with the 30d is beyond worth it. I have a 430d and it's just an awesome cruiser with plenty of backup grunt

Going to look at a 2012 320D and a 2012 520D tomorrow, still wanting to have a drive of a 530D before I decide however......

Lane 3ltr is a different world really is...and for what its worth I reckon my 2014 330d is sleightly better mpg than my 57 plate 177bhp 120d auto with the N47 engine thats in your two cars you mention although they may be up to 184bhp if I recall, surely the 5 series will be gutless ,a big car.

Edited drove 549 miles up and down the A1 yesterday obc 52.8 mpg at a guess my 120d would have shown about 47/48 mpg

I thought the 177bhp N47 was gutless in my 520d touring and I would be another to recommend the 30d for sure.

So I drove the 520d today, not what you would call "slow", but I worry that I would find myself getting bored very quickly. I have worked out my budget is in and around the £12k mark, so with a £6-7k trade in on my current car, I may need to have a rethink about what estate I go for.

The other half hates them but there is still the Octavia VRS...

I tried:

120d
320d
320d ED

Then tried my 325d which I bought instantly, the 6 cylinder is such a different experience and not that much more expensive to run

Sounds good, quite a rare engine variant as it goes.

They are around though and for that sort of money it's worth travelling to buy. I'm pondering replacing my 320d with an F10 525d and there are a few for sale at the moment in the UK. I'm also after a manual box, which narrows it down even further! Note that the 525d changed to a 4 cyl engine quite early in its production.

In terms of mpg and your original question I have a 2007 E90 320d (163bhp) and average 50-60mpg on my commute, which is 36 miles each way - 10 minutes on C roads and 35 minutes on DC and Mway. I never drive in towns and rarely in 30 limits. The range of 50-60 depends on what mood I'm in! If it's of any relevance, I get about 47mpg with my windsurfing stuff on the roof and 30mpg towing my racing car.
