It's a combination of things. The 435 handles like a boat, it's a brilliant cruiser but wallows in the corners. The auto gearbox is dull and I miss a manual, and having a dog means it's a hassle practicality wise to go away as it's not a hatchback.
On the other hand it's comfortable and good for my long daily commute and it's generally just me in the car 99% of the time. I've swapped the tyres for MPSS and looked at the ACS springs and upgrading the HK speakers to a Bavaound set - although theres no pint doing those if I chop the car in.

There are some cracking deals on the 140 with coast to coast offering £7k off list - it looks like it would bre more fun, can spec a manual etc, just slightly concerned about the road noise and comfort over the commute (we have a 120d too, and there is a Lott of road noise after a while and it's quite fidgety on dual carridgeways)
Spec the adaptive suspension and it's certainly very comfortable in comfort and handles very well in Sport, significantly better on both counts than my 2013 535d.

Haven't noticed road noise as an issue with the MPSS

How do you find the M135/M140 compared to your 535? Do you miss the comfort of the 5 series? Does the 1er still handle once you've got to know it and really push it?

I'd consider the optional LSD, but not sure if that's overkill, although I loved the diff on my old M3 and if it could re-create 75% of the fun and feeling of that car it would be great...

can you get the LSD on the 140? I thought it was only on the 240.

Out of interest, was HUD ever available on the M135i/M235i?
IIRC, No.
Bugger. I was eyeing up the possibility of an M235i to replace the 1-Series, but after hiring a 3 Series in Germany with HUD fitted, it's a must have feature now.

I didn't think it was on the factory options list for either car? Thought you could only get the LSD by going for an M-Performance kit (or by going to an after-market supplier like Birds).

Yes it's a pity they didn't add one with the 1-Series facelift. frown
Even the new Mini has an optional HUD, albeit only the cheaper version that projects to a little glass pane attached to the dashboard.

135 is definitely a better ride than the 535d which was a surprise, cabin's obviously a bit smaller but fit and finish are on a par, as a point to point car it's simply brilliant no doubt helped by the sticky tyres, not sure you'd want or need to go any faster than it's capable of

I allways thought my 120d auto was my little go kart especially with the tuning box on god knows what an M140i would feel like....I wont mention the looks...........actually I really liked my 120d 177bhper as a driver but not once in 7 years did I lock it, walk 20 yards, turn round and have a sneaky look at it

I loved my 120d too. It was an underdog. It should have been very average, but it turned out that it had character. With it's rock hard damping and firm run-flats the ride was convincingly sports car. With well worn tyres it slid more readily than the M135i. It was only the lack of an LSD that limited its ability/fun in a world of tight wet T-junctions. I looked back at it on more than one occasion and appreciated the thing. To me, it seemed significantly smaller and better looking than the 1 series that replaced it.
I had a 320td Compact for 3 years, then a 123d for six and a half! The 123d did feel like a pocket rocket with 201bhp, and I did look back at it sometimes especially when I first got it (never had a current plate car before, and never will again)!

But 2 years ago I sold it and got a Z4 Coupe - having discovered straight 6 petrol loveliness I'll never go back to diesel!

My Z4C still feels stupidly quick (and I look back every time I park it) but an M135i or M140i is even quicker - must be great fun! driving

IIRC an LSD was an option on the M235i - if so presumably it is on an M240i as well.

No sign of a LSD as a factory option for the M240i on the configurator on the BMW website? I think it may have been offered for the M235i as one of the M-Performance Pack upgrades but technically I think they're a dealer fit option and hence don't appear on the configurator; if so presumably the same will apply to the M240i as well?

The M135i is very quick, but that doesn't translate into fun. It would blow my old E36 M3 3.0 into the weeds in acceleration, but the M3 is by far the more fun and involving car to drive. I used to have a Z4M-R and I'm pretty sure I looked back at that every time I parked it. smile They're great cars. Mine came fitted with comically cheap tyres, which really meant I had to keep on top of things in the wet. It was brilliant fun.

Just lifted this from BMW.com

BMW M Performance mechanical limited slip differential at the rear axle*
The BMW M Performance differential lock on the rear axle for improved traction provides the wheel with better grip and more torque, minimising slippage on the rear axle. This results in more stable cornering, optimal traction and more dynamic driving characteristics.
For BMW M135i and M235i, not for BMW M135i xDrive and M235i xDrive.

Installation duration on request

Available for 1 Series (three-door) from 2012, 1 Series (five-door) from 2011, 2 Series Coupé, 2 Series Convertible
