I’d just go to another dealer and test drive one.

It’s either a characteristic or it’s a fault.

Isn’t the I8 a 3 potter? They can clearly make a good 3 pot engine.
The issue is likely a 3 pot cheap engine. BMW don’t make nice cheap engines.
Its the same engine as the I8

Hello all. I have just got a 2016 318i Touring with the 1.5, 3 cylinder engine. It has done 23k. I really like it but a question for anyone that has one. On cold start there is a rattle from the manifold area for the first 20 seconds or so. It is between 1-2000 revs. Does anyone else have a similar noise? The car drives great and has plenty of power - mind you I have come from a Lexus Ct200h which could never be called quick. I do miss the 60mpg though

Probably the heat shield around the turbo

Unfortunately it isn't something that simple. It sounds as if it is in the manifold itself on the os of the engine.

Thats interesting - thanks for the update! I'll consider not using mine now -
Just for balance, a work has recently sold his 123d with s/s. It had 130k miles on it and he had zero problems with it.
Well the one I had passed an MOT in October 2017 at 103K miles, but hasn't had one since - so I think I got that right! laugh

What the OP describes sounds much like what my girlfriend describes with her 3-cylinder Toyota IQ. Toyota did an inlet manifold recall I believe to solve this issue, but she is yet to have it done.

One of the managers where I work in engineering used to work at the engine plant where these are made......
he told me to steer clear of bmw 3cyl... I said I wouldn’t ever bother & he then said but I thought you wanted an M135i so it’s the same engine.... erm No - says it all really
