I've got an M140i on order to accompany my Z4M which arrives on 1st Sept. I'll be using it as a daily to keep the miles down on the Z. I haven't driven one yet - or even an M135i so I'd be really interested to know what to expect - particularly compared with other BMWs that I've had inc E46 M3 etc. I'm hoping for a softer daily than my Z, but something a lot quicker and sharper with much more torque than my previous daily - a (manual) e61 530i M Sport Touring. The handling seems to get mixed reviews so any real world experience would be great. Be interested given the short wheelbase how they handle compared to 3 series etc - which I've driven a lot.

Spec is Manual 3 door, Adaptive dampers and LEDs, sunroof etc.

And yes, I know it's not a proper M etc!

Z4M 343 hp/7900 rpm; 365 Nm/4900 rpm; 12.1 l/100 km; 1425kg
M140i 340 hp/5500 rpm; 500 Nm/1520 – 4500 rpm; 7.8 l/100 km; 1445kg

Actually, comparing the technical data I'm curious how they compare when driven. Ten years between them. You'll need to report back when you have that 140i!

Yes the torque looks interesting! I've always enjoyed the S54 in the Z for what it is and never felt it lacked torque but the 140 is in another league! Pretty much the same as my e91 330d... Will definitely report back.

I have one on order too.
There are a few early reviews on babybmw.net which are positive. Subtle changes from the m135i. Biggest debate seems to be whether the exhaust note is louder/quieter/better.

Just ordered a 440i M Sport Convertible - interested to see if anyone has experience of this engine in a 4 series? Much heavier then the 1, so performance will no doubt suffer as a result, but will it still be 'adequate'?

I've had mine about 3 weeks now. Was the first registered in the UK smile What spec did you go for? Mines an Auto.

Loving it. bit weird how there has been nothing about it in the press at all. A new Golf R and people would be foaming at the mouth.

and the new bit

I'm very interested in one of these in a five door😀 The new engine looks like it will be a real gem, charge cooler integrated with the inlet manifold to cut down on the charge pipe work length and a new design of the alloy block which is shared with the new generation diesel so it should be very strong and stiff, which is good for future tuning...
I might get myself down to the local BMW dealer to have a look at one...

I think you will be lucky to find a dealer with a physical car. The one I bought from said their demo wasn't expected until November at the earliest! If it's deals you are after. Speak to TRL (Tony) from Babybmw.net. He consistently gets the best deals. up to 20% off list is possible!

Yes very strange!

Glad you're enjoying it. My spec is 3 door, Estoril, Manual, Sunroof, heated black leather, upgraded speakers, adaptive suspension, adaptive LEDs, non run flats

Can't wait! Had BMWs for about 20 years so will make an interesting comparison. Keeping the Z4M for summer duties. As one of the other posts has pointed out, similar BHP just delivered very differently.

The "performance" wording on the engine cover looks very 1980's Ford don't you think. (No offence OP, it's a lovely car!)

Looking at those power/ torque figure,I'd be worried it'll deliver the power like a turbo diesel. Looks like there won't be much advantage/pleasure in reving it past 5.5k.

Yes - it's epic so far. Incredible torque and smoothness. It's a struggle keeping the revs below 4000 - but so far it feels quicker by far than my similarly horsepoweres Z4M although far less of an animal. The adaptive dampers are brilliant in allowing one to be able to cover ground quickly on B roads - which the Z can't do. As a companion to the rather savage Z, I couldn't wish for more.

The new engine, which is also found in the 440i in a lower tune is apparently well up for being taken all the way to red line, much more than the old engine found in the M135/235 and 435i

I went in for a nose around yesterday with a view to possibly leasing one and came out having bought one! Pick it up on Friday!

3 door, Melbourne Red, black leather, professional nav, HK stereo and a few other bits. Brand new but being registered before the end of the month. Hopefully the 'we need to sell 5 more cars this half year' deal wasn't too bad.

39 years old and my first new car.

Had mine 2 weeks now but still in the running in phase. Have to say though it feels quite different from my old M135, not just the extra torque which is immediately noticeable but it generally feels more planted at higher speeds/less fidgety at low speeds , is much quieter on the motorway and is already returning economy figures better than my old one could manage when it was new. It really is a great all rounder, can't think of anything else I'd rather have for day to day use at the price level they're at, just a pity they couldn't engineer a bit of feel back into the steering..
