With under 80k miles I can find is this one? http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/b... Is that correct? Loads of smg or higher miles.

Well, if you must have a manual, that still seems steep unless all the usual E46 suspects have been addressed (and the interior has no cosmetic damage).

It's age means that the mileage is now largely irrelevant as an indicator of condition.

I wouldn't bother with that example - whilst it says it's a manual (well, technically it is), it's actually an SMG version. You can tell from the picture of the dials which has the gear position display, as well as the shot of the interior from the open driver door where you can get a glimpse of the SMG gear selector.

Great car the E46 M3, and totally agree with you on going for a manual. When you do get one, change the gear knob for the US F10 M5 version and it will feel much better.

I think the paddles on the steering wheel are the biggest tell tale.....
