Why won't it?
Because the notably lighter E90 330d on average would do 38-42mpg the E60 530d will do a fair bit less thus not meeting his requirement. Remember we're talking about the 224bhp version of the engine.

You should consider a 525d too, perhaps; it's only 30bhp down on a 530d, a remap can fix that if you're really that bothered, and 46mpg on an 80mph cruise, 38mpg average around town.

My E39 530i would average mid 30's on dual carriageway work. I can't see why an E60 530d would be no better than that.

My old E90 330d would do mid 50's/60mpg just on dual carriageways but it's combined OP is after and that's where it doesn't work.

Fact is the E90 330d 231bhp auto is a 38-42mpg car
Fact is the F10 535d 299bhp auto is a 40-42mpg car

If you think one of the oldest available E60 530ds will do high 30's mpg average you've a surprise coming.

I have a 56 plate 530D M Sport, remapped to around 270bhp (apparently) and it averages about 38mpg.

I have had 42mpg (brim to brim, not computer figures) on a decent run with 65mph motorway driving.

I do use cruise control nearly all the time, as it's a lovely way to keep points off my license, but I guess it improves the mpg a bit too smile

I had an e39 540 for two years and, on the type of driving i would do on my commute, it could do around 31mpg (calculated). I'd be very disappointed if a 530d couldn't manage 7mpg more than an old 4.4 v8.

As said before, my drive to work is about 20 miles, 10 being dual carriage way and the majority of the rest is single lane national speed limit. Only a few bits at 30 and 40 mph.

I have a light foot, most of the time, and generally cruise at between 65 and 70. I managed Leicester to Ilfracombe, north devon, on just over a 1/3 of a tank in the 540.

Our 2004 218hp 530D averaged 38mpg over the course of 3000 miles. That was 95% A and B road commuting and school runs. On along trip to France and back it managed 48mpg door to door.

If its only getting low 30's you probably have knackered thermostats which make the car overfuel thinking its not up to temp yet. Common issue on them and easily fixed.

Spot on with those Stats. They should be a standard replacement "service" part at 100k.

What damage does over feeling do on a diesel? I'm thinking none really unless CAT damage.
