After some serious saving we rejigged our cars - from an F10 M5 and 120d to X5 (F15) 50d and the 140. I have been really surprised by the 140 as whilst it is not as comfortable as the M5/X5 it is more than comfortable enough for town and motorway and in the last month the X5 has only been out once! I have used the 140 on the motorway and used the phone for good lenghts of time with no concern re. noise. I was also pretty amazed to get 43mpg when cruising at 75 with eco on!

I didnt opt for adaptive suspension and I haven't missed it.. Once or twice I have wondered about 4 wheel drive but then I did the same in the M5.. not for point to point as the rear is so predictable when driving like a redneck but putting the power down from low speeds in poor traction... that said, when 4x4 is available (I believe on the next model of 1 Series) I do hope it doesn't give awful under steer like the RS3 does or feel boring...

And my biggest surprise, through the twisties the 140 is as quick as the M5 (well, in my hands anyway) primarily as the M5 is such a boat.. clearly on the motorway the M5 has much more pulling power but a) how many times do you get to do licence loosing speeds and b) the M5 is so comfortable that you lose the raw sensation of speed that you get in something like a 911Turbo.
Thanks for that. Took a 135i out for a test drive and loved it. The dealer is trying to find out about xdrive for me, as the wife will be driving it, I'd prefer it not to be RWD only as she already thinks that the ST has too much power

Popped into BMW to enquire about 140i...

Sales fella said that Valencia Orange and manual box are no longer available..

Both are still available on the online configurator.

Is he talking rubbish?

What does the carplay do?
Makes a hire car without nav useful. Beyond that? I've no idea.

I was pleased my last rental car - a Cadillac ATS - had it because otherwise I'd have had no satnav but Carplay with Apple Maps was nothing like as good as BMW Professionl Navigation and you don't need carplay for music integration etc either.

Siri was fairly useless too, other than basic stuff it kept saying 'I can't do that whilst you are driving'.

Might change in the future, but agree -- currently there is only navigation on it that is really useful. Neatly undone by BMW forcing you to buy their pro nav in order to get CarPlay. Not a technical limitation but rather strategy smile.

Because potentially, the CarPlay stuff can do the same or more compared to BMW's 'connected' suite of services -- navigation, real time traffic info, speed cams, driver assistance, integration of IM software, etc... The phone takes over the screen, the car supplies display, audio, controls and access to it's data. With smart phone tech evolving quicker and at lower cost (for the user), this could be quite neat. Especially for folks that keep their cars a bit longer.

Apple are shooting themselves in the foot though, they are pretty restrictive with what they allow on CarPlay. E.g. the greedy buggers (currently) don't let any offline navigation apps in, since they want to collect user data to make $$$. Cost wise bit less of an issue in the EU from next year (data roaming price equality), but still quite annoying (privacy, functionality in places where cell data is weak).

In the meantime, BMW are trying to develop / hold on to their 'connected' business for as much and as long as they can. Can't blame them really, they can also make $$$ from the user data and a tidy profit from selling their (overpriced) navs.

Bit tongue in cheek, but way I see it for current 1 Series buyers:

- Do you really need the pro-nav?
- Will you keep the car longer that ~ 4 years?
- Will you keep using Apple smart phones for that time?

Answer 'yes' to all three questions then it can't hurt to tick the CarPlay box.

Almost got the car run in now - about 50 miles off, so starting to push it a bit more.

It's a bit of a beast, but also power delivery is slightly diesel-like - it will rev to 7000 (I've not been there yet), but power delivery is all between about 2000-4500 rpm. It pushes you back into your seat though - and the 'in gear' acceleration is fast... really fast.

Manual mode (with paddles) is great - especially when you're pushing on a bit. 1st-2nd can be a bit odd but when you're going it's great... downshift blips are fun.

Just ordered my M140i yesterday. Those looking for the best possible deal should speak to Terry Linford at Arden Maidstone. I got £9k off mine (including the £3750 finance deposit contribution from BMW) which blew C2C and TRL away!

Spec below:
M140i 5dr sports auto
Alpine white
Red leather
Pro media pack
Adaptive M suspension
Sun protection glass
Folding mirrors
Heated front seats
Harmon Kardon speakers
Driver comfort pack
Front and rear parking sensors
Lumbar support

Didn't have many available build slots so mine arrives Feb!

Have you guys tried launch control yet?

Haha it's certainly a laugh out loud moment, although I probably looked a total dick doing it off the lights.

Also been reading about remaps. Seems that they are producing around 410bhp. awfully tempting!!

I've tried it, i wasn't all that impressed to be honest. I can get off the line quicker without it and it's a bit of a faff to activate. Mine is remapped so that and the fact BMW give the impression it's less than ideal for the car i doubt i'll use it again.

Good for pub talk though. smile

I bought mine. I got a couple of quotes from brokers and went to my local dealer and asked them if they could match, which they did and threw in the service pack. I got a discount of just short of £7800 in the end.
Nice , can I ask which dealer you dealt with in end mate ?

It's ok - start up is nice but it quietens down quickly. The engine note is nice though. I might end up with the upgraded exhaust, but wouldn't want a drone when I'm on the motorway, so need to hear one first.
I test drove a 135 with sports exhaust . It's on permanently but was perfectly fine no droning and sounded awesome

Can someone pls tell me more about adaptive dampers option ?

Also is there any add on to the M package or does that all come as standard ?

Tks

The standard brakes are more than up to the task, i've done a two hour track night in mine with not even a single sign of brake fade and could outbrake a lot of other cars on track easily.
Are these the blue calliper type that come with the car ?

Gotta say mate that's a cracking deal with all that Spec and pretty much what I'm looking to order although I may look to switch the HK and pro media pack for a sports exhaust instead .

Watched a vid of Chris Harris on the a45 Amg vs the 135i, you could tell he liked the 135 more but stressed go easy on the options to ensure you get ridiculous value for money compared to the rivals .
He did say the adaptive suspension is a must though .

Any chance of a LSD going forward on these cars ?

I took delivery of my M135i back in March with Adaptive suspension and I'd say it's fantastic, reading other comments on here I'd definitely spec it

Yeah Arden Maidstone will beat any quote you give them, with no dealer coming close. I'm coming from a Golf R where the only option I specced was the adaptive dampers - the spec on the beemer was shocking as standard and that discount meant I could spec the niceties!

I believe BMW do an LSD as a dealer fit option but I must say that on the test drive (albeit on a dry day), I didn't find any need for it on the road and that's coming from a Golf R with tenacious traction
