OP asked for a petrol. You offered a diesel. It's not an alternative!
The 2 litre petrol engine is garbage, the diesel is an alternative to at least consider. I've clearly upset you - I'm sorry for that. The petrol engine might well be garbage but if someone specifically asks for a petrol engine, they care enough about the fuel type that they are not going to want a diesel.
Hence suggesting the 125i is an alternative, suggesting the 120d isn't.
Especially in a convertible (personally I can't think of much worse than a diesel convertible but people obviously buy them).

Oh okay. I just wondered why you needed to have a pop at me. I was simply offering the OP advice - my mistake. The petrol engine might well be garbage but if someone specifically asks for a petrol engine, they care enough about the fuel type that they are not going to want a diesel.

I've recently been investigating a 3 series petrol of similar age & completely canned the idea following a chat with a well respected (ex BMW Master-tech) Indy. He's doing very nicely fixing N43/N46 engines. He's just sorted out my E90 320d & verdict was to keep it till the F30's (3 series 2012 onwards)come down in price a bit.
His words on anything with an N43/46/53 engine?
"Avoid like the plague"

Maybe you should try one. The petrol engine might well be garbage but if someone specifically asks for a petrol engine, they care enough about the fuel type that they are not going to want a diesel.

What do you think you will hear? I'll give you a clue, its not the engine, its the same as in any other convertible.....wind noise!

Your views are really quite misguided, but if that's what you want to believe, be my guest...

Presumably all the other modern diesels on the road that stink and clatter past are also figments of my imagination.

But seriously, some diesels are actually quite decent - and going back to the thread, some petrols (like the aforementioned BMW 20i engine can be pretty crap.
Horses for courses.
A mate of mine bought a 120i Convertible for a family member (is that you?) recently. 40'000 miles, FSH. Did 30 or 40 miles in it when the EML light came on. An ex BMW dealer mate took the cam cover off to find the guides shattered. The sump was full of bits, many of which were blocking the oil pick up strainer - he was very lucky to get away with that.

This is exactly what the guy I was talking to said happens. N43 & N46 are a liability it seems. Doubtless there will be some that do 150K without missing a beat - but not all, by any means.Wombat3 said:

Not seen 150k on one yet! Most I've seen is 110k, it has had a modified timing chain tensioner fitted to prevent chain wear. Also had new valvetronic motor and four coils&most of the oil seals/gaskets changed.helix402 said:

As I understand it the N43 engine was produced from 2007 onward, which I believe coincides with the first update of the 1 series which introduced a number of changes under Efficient Dynamics guise.
But how about the petrol 2.0 before that between 2004-06 (the N46), are there any known major issues with those engines?

N46. Not as bad as the N43, but you still have the oil leaks (these units literally sweat oil), timing chain dramas, vanos units.
Just don't bother. A 2004-7 M47 120d is a far, far superior car.

Diesel not really an option for me as anything pre Euro6 will be effectively banned (ie: taxed out) where I live in a few years. Plus, I hate diesels!!
