So im looking at a BMW M135i at the moment and the vendor tells me it has 1 registered owner. He is a private seller and had an C63 AMG before that somebody gave him the M135i for and some cash. He then only told DVLA it was 'For Sale Purposes' and therefore didnt have to register as an owner but only provide his information should tickets etc. be incurred. He also said his insureres have been informed of the same.

is this a real thing as I cant find any information online - but I assume this is how traders get around having to add a new owner every time they buy and sell a car?

SO you mean someone gave him M135i and cash for for his C63?

If so, then the only way I think he couldn't be a registered keeper is if the seller of the M135i filled in the yellow part of the V5, section 9 which says (I;m looking at one) "selling or transferring to a motor trader, insurer or dismantler. " It's what I filled in when I sold my old BMW to WBAC as they aren't going to own it; a normal private sale requires section 10 to be filled in instead; the little green slip new keeper gets until the full new V5

This bit should sounds okay and you're spot on, it's how traders avoid (legally) being keepers.

My question is can he legitimately be a motor trader as you say he is a private seller? ?

However, I'm not sure (providing you trust the car is his to sell etc. etc.) if that's your problem. As long as he's got a bonafide V5 with I assume the original keeper's details (and no previous keepers listed) then he can sell it to you.

However, this is worth checking with DVLA who I find approachable.
