It sounds to Me as though they did the job exactly as a BMW dealer would rather than cut corners, and it's interesting to note that they took pictures to show you the work carried out on your car to prove it (they've probably had accusations of charging for work not really carried out in the past and so now cover themselves by photographing the work as they go along).

Based on BMW charging @ £700 for this job, £385 sounds about right for an non-BMW garage to do the job.

There are always going to be people who know how to do the job for a lot less, or know an easier way of doing it, but at the end of the day, all that matters is that you're happy with the work done, and price you paid. If others have a problem with any of it then that's their tough scensoredt!
I'm happy with it and the pricing, I probably could have saved £50 or so by pushing another place to do it but the issue with that is I would have had to pay another £55 for a new MOT test so it was a false economy. Of course there is always a niggling doubt that a garage is trying to rip you off but sometimes, you have to put an element of trust in and yes, it's good that they document what they're doing as it puts customers minds at rest.

That and these are central London garage prices!

Hi, car failed its mot due to corroded rear brake pipes. Anyone had this work done recently? Wondering what a ballpark figure for this work would be. I appreciate it's not a quick job but want to make sure I'm not being overcharged.

Thanks in advance
E36 here so similar chassis.

Had both sides done a few years ago by a indie (2012/13 i think), they had to drop the fuel tank and all that good stuff. I paid around £400 quid and had copper lines instead of the stock metal (steel?) which will probably out live the car. I expect it would probably cost closer to £500 nowadays.

Holy thread bump Batman. My rear brake pipes have come up as corroded as an advisory on the last two MOTs, tester said it would likely not make it through the next one in November

Indies local to me (Berkshire/North Hampshire) are quoting £500-£650 inc VAT using the dropped tank method. Be interested if anyone knows of anyone local doing it for less than that?

I guess I'll have to suck it up and have a nice fat bill in my maintenance folder come resale time, but it's a tough one to swallow. The parts required are a small fraction of the bill.

Yeah, I'll be closing my eyes for that one. Reddish Motorsport reckon they see cracks in 95% of cars that they inspect.

Mine is relatively lightly used at 85k miles but you never know ...

Do they show the owners photographs/videos of the damage they find?

The cynic in me is saying: "As a company that makes money out of carry out boot floor repairs, is it really a surprise that they find so many requiring the work to be carried out? "

You get a full video of the inspection. Only trouble is that inspection costs 435 quid, to let you know the extent of any problems

My Z4 Coupe had MOT advisories for corroded rear brake pipes 3 years running so in 2017 I got them replaced in Kunifer for £100!

The OE ones are pre-shaped which is why the fuel tank needs to be dropped to fit the driver's side one, whereas Kunifer can be fed through the support brackets with the tank still in place then shaped on the other side - I expect the E46 is much the same. And unlike the OE ones Kunifer doesn't corrode!

After 15 years at Sytner Ross set up on his own in Hook, Hants in 2019 and would be worth a call. Link here:- https://www.rbmhampshire.co.uk/

My partner had this as an advisory 3 years running, last 2 MOTs not even mentioned. Standard job on an e46, I'd just phone around for the cheapest quote. If it comes up as an advisory it's worth cleaning them off and treating with Waxoyl.

Lost count of all the e46's I've had, heard lots about cracking around the rear mounts but never seen it, not even on the M3 or mega mapped 330d which I ragged mercilessly and ran to over 210k miles.
