I've got one of these impact drivers - is it possible to use it to remove wheel bolts from my BMW 3 series (2012 F30)? I'd like to change my 18" wheels to winter steels (have checked fitment etc).

If it's possible, what impact socket would you recommend?

Cheers!

Normally they are 18V or more, and that one looks rather small (105 NM max) for wheel bolts application - you would also need an adapter.

However, seems it could work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pq7qiJKQ2PA

No chance with that. That's a sort of glorified screwdriver.

You want a full 1/2 inch drive impact driver that will produce over 100 lb/ft of torque. The nuts/bolts will not be that tight but usually you will need one rated higher than the torque you want to apply.

Nothing wrong with a half-drive socket and T-bar (or speedbrace) for that job.
No need to over-complicate simple jobs. . .

We've got a Dewalt one at work with massive break torque and sustained torque of 950Nm I think it is. It takes off HGV bolts with ease!

I got a nylon sleeved impact socket from eBay. Not sure about that driver. I also use a Dewalt.

I have the 550 nm version. And it won' t undo the X5 bolts because the absolute window licking tyre fitting bd must of done them up with a 10ft scaffold pole !

No need to get anything like that - this will do the job without any fuss.

I've got the 18v version of that impact driver (it's an impact driver, not impact wrench). Rated at 160nm.

Wouldn't loosen a 105nm wheel bolt.

Still handy for car stuff, though.

What wheel/tyre sizes have you gone for?

Much as I suggested. Avoids problems with high-torque drivers:

No chance laugh

You need a very expensive one for wheel bolts.

I asked the guy I know who I have been going to for my tyres for years, about the one he has, as quite fancied one myself, until he said it cost £750......

I have a Makita DTW285
http://www.makitauk.com/products/cordless-tools/im...

Plenty of torque (295lb/ft) for undoing almost any nut...in fact, for tightening wheel nuts, you have to use a bit of care, the lowest torque setting and a torque wrench afterwards
edit: costs (including a 4ah battery and charger) <£300)

Damn you, just bought one of those bad boys wink The Bosch GDS EC 250 was in contention but the Dewalt 285 has a 400 Nm removal rating.

How many times are you going to be taking the wheels on and off? I have to think its better value to buy a decent torque wrench and breaker bar and do it manually.

Absolutely, this is man's logic at work here - already have breakers bar and torque wrench, of course. This would be for swapping over twice a year summer/winter wheels, So quite unjustifiable, except I just fancied one to add to the tool "collection" and use for general DIY too.

yes

Breaker bar for removing the wheel bolts and a decent torque wrench to fit the wheel bolts!
