Guilty pleasure coming up..

I go out to the car at lunch and sit in the back! Bit of music, some PH browsing on my phone, lovely :-D
It's not guilty until you leave the engine running to stop the aircon flattening the battery.

Valve stem seals? They are a worry, but most failures are due to the looooooong service intervals on oil if the CBS is used. This one has had regular services and oil changes, no smoke.
Does the V12 suffer from the same problem as the v8?
Even as someone who's diy'd the seals on my e65, there's no way I would tackle the v12
I did consider the v12's as there's quite a few out there, but settled for the relatively better consumption of the 750 which returns around 26-28 on my motorway commute.

I guess there is a bit of balls involved, but mainly maths.

I could go out and get a new car like a golf gti, this would be £300 a month plus depreciation, and you still need consumables so they are discounted.

Something like this 760 is CONSIDERABLY cheaper than that a month, any left over is for unforseen issues, and that will cover a LOT of issues!

Then you come to compare what you get for your money, does a golf have 440hp and 600Nm? Does it have heated 20+way adjustable massage seats? Active ARB's? This is just a nobrainer for me, pick the bonkers luxury over the 'new' car :-)
Love the logic. If you mean £300 for a lease/PCP though, that figure covers depreciation.
To be fair BI, you are clearly quite handy and can resolve a lot of niggles for modest outlay. To get a dealer to repair this beast would be wallet draining. keep us posted on your ownership experience.

Brilliant!

Reminds me of my first experience of a 7er. Got picked up from Frankfurt Main Airport by one in 2005 - a 760iL just like yours. Fully kitted out and a Driver who was more than up for demonstrating how many ponies he had under the bonnet up front. All whilst I was fiddling with the rear comfort seats, window blinds & rear iDrive! smile

Awesome. I wish you all the luck with it. Closest I got was a E60 550i. Yours must be epic!

I always look at these and big engine merc s classes but when it comes to crunch time I wimp out and buy something safe, or something I at least perceive will be reliable.
But God I've wanted a 760li since I saw the maroon red in the film Taxi (the one with Queen Latifa and those Brazilian models)

Saw this last week and confused the kids by taking a picture of 'some old car'.

Good plates... shame it's a 730d.

I have purchased a barge...
Individual taste in BMWs will always vary but I think you made an excellent choice there BlownImp.

I've been indulging the BMW barge habit for years, usually buying a 740/745/750/760 at around 50,000 miles and taking them to 200,000 or so before starting all over again.

Big 7s are superb cars. A bill or two has arrived over the years but that's the name of the game and as it happens I've been surprised at how reliable these relatively complex battery draining behemoths can be.

Taking a recent couple of cars, the ABS control unit decided to retire on one at 90,000 miles but on another the same problem only cropped up at over 150,000.

Not bad really but even so the leggy 7 had another 50,000 miles to go at the time, and it's still going strong.

Amazing value! £120k car for £10k assuming all is indeed as well as can be expected.

Getting so much car for the money makes it a sweet deal if you like that sort of thing, and I certainly do.

On the value side they're worth more than they're worth wink to the right people. I suspect demand is limited...even though there's a select band of barge admirers, pricing may well reflect the thought of mpg and potential repair costs (and insurance for some). In a way, that's OK as it makes for a better deal for the rest of us.

Its amazing isnt it.

Even if you had to spend £5k bringing it up to 100%, it still seems like a huge bargain.

The depreciation is just savage though. Here is a 2011 with 46k miles for £26k.

Assuming it was £120k? Thats £20k a year in depreciation - £1600 a month or £2.17 per mile! yikes

The car looks suspect or at least some thorough investigating.

First Reg date 20 Sept 2010 (not 2011)

Odd MOT history

Sept 2013 14k miles
22 Jan 14 14.3k miles
17 Dec 14 21.2k
11 march 15 26.6k
11 March 16 40k
6 April 16 41k

A look at the wool mats shows almost worn through and in very poor condition. I would say almost without doubt that there is no way mats would wear through so fast. I think its been clocked. OR its a shed (or both). Having owned this model BMW before and researched very low mile barges (7 series) the low miles is a warning that the car has been a nightmare and spent a long time in the garage having faults remedied.

The above not detracting from the market value of a good one of similar age/miles.

You can buy a last of the old model 760, say 2014-15 for 50k and with the new one, when fully optioned coming in at 140k i doubt you'll see many.

Must admit I questioned your valuation of the 760 so went to check... 70 is 76k, 760 is 132k! yikes

You'd have to really, really want a V12.

It is a box that requires ticking I think. The barge route seems to be the only way without being seriously well off, unfortunately.

Update!

I have put about 400 miles on the car, used around one tank of fuel and loved almost every minute (we will come to that!).

I have purchased a gearbox oil and filter kit, air filters, cabin filters, oil filter and engine oil. 5w30 Shell Helix Ultra for the engine and Mannol 6HP26 compatible oil for the gearbag.

Last weekend I managed to get the microfilters changed, went to change the air filters and found that they had sent incorrect items frown I had been sent 1261 and I need 1216!
Whilst the airbox top was off, I thought I would give the MAF's a bit of a spritz with contact cleaner, always good to keep them clean.

Put it all back together and carried on with the weekend, took about an hour all in. Now I moved the car to do the work, then started it to check the oil level, then moved the car again, and again later in the day (we a re-gravelling the drive). Right from the start the car has been complaining about a low battery so I know it was weak, and when I came to move it once more on sunday afternoon, no dice.

This of course caused huge panic as E65's go a bit mental when the power runs low, this was no exception. I popped the charger on the battery but there was a handbrake warning on the dash, the charger promptly blew it's 10a fuse. Solution was to disconnect the battery, stick it on charge. Job done, shut boot to leave charging.

Just as my hand left the bootlid to close brain says 'it's electronic locking and hydraulic open' FUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKK.

Instant thoughts were 'well it was a fun few miles, i guess we can scrap it now'. After I calmed down I realised I had a proper key, but no sign of a lock, after a short search I found the manual lock hidden above the rear numberplate. PHEW.

So charged it up and got it running, but it was not happy, random faults and very rough running.

I distracted myself from this by refurbishing the lights, the UV coating was a right mess, yellowed and cracking.
I got an autoglym kit from halfrauds with a drill adaptor. Fact is you could do it with various grades of W&D and some G3, the kit just has it all in once place and i'm lazy.
Initially I did it by the instructions, dry. This did not work well, once things were wet we made some real progress (isn't this always the way!). It's a scary process as you have to really f*ck up the lights before you make any real improvement. No in process pics as I was rapidly running out of light!

Huge improvement!

The car was luckily hardly used during the week due to me getting a savage cold, when it was used it was complaining at me rather a lot with warnings of impending doom, red lights and 'DRIVE MODERATELY, ENGINE FAULT'.

A battery was ordered, as was a cheap ebay tool with all the BMW software to do diagnostics and fault finding.
That was fitted this weekend, along with the airfilters that turned up. It took an age to get all the software downloaded and working but once done, it was fine. There were something like 500 faults recorded, it looks like the battery low really does make them go crackers!

Faults cleared and new batt in, she starts smoothly and should run well smile

I also managed to drain the power steering / active anti roll bar tank and refilled it with new CHF11s fluid, this will be done again in the near future, once it has mixed again.

Finally it was given a clean, some collinite and abit of bumper gel on the black bits smile

Cost so far -

Gearbag kit - £140
Filters - £50
Engine oil - £35
Battery - £80
Diagnostics stuff - £30
Headlight kit - £20

More soon, shes booked in to Walkers Auto's in a couple of weeks for the gearbox oil change smile
