Back out here again, third time lucky with the tracking. String boxing is laborious but rewarding. I can add a little more toe to one side to counter road camber.
It drove lovely last week when I did it, but I managed to get the steering wheel off centre! Frustrating.

Otherwise, some new parking sensors have been fitted, fixing the PDC. Easiest car to do it on ever, don't even have to pull the bumpers! You just pop the trim piece off, and they are mounted in that.
This was diagnosed using INPA. The distance measurement was useless as they all said full scale, but the frequency page showed three sensors either at zero or 255.

The Logic7 is also sorted, I found a late model amplifier at a good price (part no ending 389?), fitted and it is back to new.

More soon.

I used to set my E46 using the string method and managed to get it lovely. Very even tyre wear and very neutral. It's a bit of a fiddle alright. Not sure I'll tackle it on my F10 though.

Assuming the steering wheel was straight before you started, you should have expected it to be out after you adjusted the toe on only one side.

The steering wheel may be straight on a certain level of camber but it’ll be out somewhere.

You can’t stop a car following camber by simply adjusting toe.

This car does mostly motorway miles, and they are usually a pretty fixed camber. I adjust for the most prevalent road conditions. Plus I cant adjust castor, so can't make much impact on it otherwise to counter road camber.
I am doing what I can with a reasonable level of understanding of vehicle dynamics.

Morning all. Long time lurker here, first post, so be gentle...

Can I join in with this thread? I bought an 03 760Li about 6 months ago and have stuck about 6,000 miles on it since. Absolutely love it, and my girlfriend's daughter and her mates absolutely love lounging in the back watching DVD's and playing music too loud while fidgeting with the blinds. And I have actually achieved 31mpg out of it on a gentle run back from Bristol to the North West.

I have fixed, or had fixed quite a few niggles but there are 3 that I am struggling with, and wondered if any of you other owners had any ideas around these.

1. I get a dynamic drive error when I go round tight, right hand bends a bit quickly. This disappeared when I had new tyres fitted but is creeping back now. It disappears when I turn the car off then back on again, but it is spoiling my enjoyment of the car.
2. The active cruise control doesn't work. The fault is listed as a 'heater problem with the sensor'. Does that mean a new sensor or is there an electrical solution? I can't see ant mention of the heater within the fuse layouts.
3. The illuminated ring round the inside of the rev counter very rarely goes off, and if it does comes back on again fairly quickly. I assume that this marks out a maximum rev limit when the engine is cold, but does the fact that it never goes out mean the engine is running too cold? Of course, BMW didn't think a temperature gauge was necessary, so it's not easy to tell.

Other than this, the car is fantastic, everybody should own one. For a bit. Till their money runs out...

You can still access the real coolant temp on the obc using the hidden menu on newer BMW’s - I st myself on my 740 V8 and found normal operating temp was 118 deg C

Probably best to start your own thread re your questions instead of piggybacking on another thread smile

Re your dynamic drive issue, check the fluid level, as if that’s low, it’ll cause that warning. And if it’s low, you’ve more than likely got a leak that needs looking into

Ah, apologies for Hijacking the thread. I basically joined to help sing the praises of the E66 Luxobarge, but got a bit carried away and thought well, while I'm here!

Point taken, but thanks for the tip about the DD fluid, will give it a check.

And have the error codes read - there may be some additonal cues there.

No worries! I don't mind a hijack biggrin

1.Change the fluid in the tank, run it, change it again etc, until you have put about 2-3L through it. It will help the components last a lot longer and it should run smoother. Hopefully your fault is just low fluid.
2. Not sure on this one, certainly sounds like a dodgy radar dome. Do you have DIS / INPA / GT1?
3. The ring around the rev counter is the limit due to engine temp, as said before, pull up the hidden menu (guides on youtube etc) and look at running temp, it should be over 100 deg C. If it is low and never comes up, it will need a thermostat and housing most likely.

As for mine.....

I have spent the past few months contemplating on what to do with Wally as my kids call him.
We are at the point where it needs some more heavy duty maintenance, so I have been thinking about selling him. The thing is, what does it get replaced with? What is a better car?

I have been through a lot of loops, SLK55 AMG? M3? Citroen XM? Citroen C6? A Citroen C5 and a Merc 500e? Another 7? Buy or get a car on PCP?

The fact is, the car has cost me so little in three years that it is basically free. What else has the interior quality, the ride, the power of the 760li? Not much. The only down side is the fuel consumption. Even then, it costs about £100 / month over a really boring diesel. Not worth swapping out in my eyes.

Fuel consumption average since I have owned it has been 23.6, impressive for a 440hp V12

Because of all this, I have decided to keep it and give it a birthday!

In mid December, Wally is booked in with Walkers Autosport for the following:

Engine mounts
Gearbox mounts
Front strut top mountings and axial bearings
Rear trailing arm inner bushes
Rear drop links

I will also be upgrading the amplifier with a Bavtronik Audio board, new Osram Laser bulbs (both HID and halogen), a new voltage module (IVM, a common issue with all BMW’s of this age), change out the hydraulic fluid again, and possibly new wheels to go with new tyres.

More soon 

I bought my M3 from Walkers, Andy and the team are the only people I trust to work on my car even though it's 1:30h away from home.
