X1 and E46 17"-steel wheels will fit no problem; and imo they look good. I prefer the E46 type, as it has a chrome centre cap:

That's the steel wheel BMW will sell you for the 330i, silver, with overpriced centre cap available separately! The smallest wheel you can fit on a 330i is a 17, so BMW decided to recommend 205/50-17's on these steel rims, so that you could still get some chains over them! I couldn't bring myself to get a set when I had my 330i, so my staggered 17's did the job all year round (225/45-17 front, 245/40-17 rear).

I'm a big fan of the steelie winter look. It's looks odd to some but special to others....

I had 16" steelies on my old ST220. This isn't actually my one, but it looked exactly like this!

I decided to get some winter wheels for my M140i. Luckily, I was shopping for them in the middle of the summer, so picked up a set of 17" genuine type 380 Y-spoke wheels in mint condition with only about 2000miles on them, with OE fit Conti wintercontact runflat tyres. I got the whole lot for £550.

Having been told by BMW that without temp and pressure sensors they would revert back to the 'comparitive wheel rotational speed' method, this turned out to be incorrect, so I decided to buy a set of genuine sensors for £125 and got them fitted an my local indy (after a ridiculous & quite offensive quote from the dealer). I like the look, its stealthy. Interstingly even though these are 17" vs the summer 18" M-Sport wheels, I find the ride slightly harsher due to the run-flat tyres vs the supersports. Thankfully, this is compensated for somewhat by the adaptive damping comfort setting.

Cheap alloys make it look like you are trying, but can afford very little.
Steelies make it look like you don't give a toss about what other people think, and are going for pure function.

Steelies are like a tough Scottish warrior wearing a kilt on a windy day. The fashion conscious suited man will see a bloke in a skirt flashing his hairy nads, but we all know which of the two men one means business.

I tried to get black steelies for my 535d a while back, but failed. Had to go for 17" alloys and I still feel like a failure, despite them looking decidedly odd (F10 M Sport).
Just a hunch, but I think/fear you might be reading too much into this whole wheel "thing" ..... smile

laugh I think you're right!

Thinking about it I can't remember the last time I ever so much as glanced at the wheels of another car.....let alone wondered about the personality of whoever was driving it.
