Indeed, that goes without saying, given it was written by my good self, non? My criteria are handling, performance, comfort, refinement, looks and technology.

Build quality... probably about on a par given they both have their well documented foibles which need attention, most of which visited me in one way or t'other during the course of ownership.

Yes, but you said "you" rather than "I".

Anyway, if you like your E61 for those things hooray. Some of those things like straght line performance versus fuel economy are indisputably better on the newer cars: the numbers don't lie. I much prefer the looks of the E39, inside and out, but all aesthetic judgments are subjective and while I absolutely hated the E60 wen it was new, it had gadualy grown on me over the years. I also prefer the ride, and feel they are made of substantially better quality materials inside (though the E34 is probably better still in that regard).

I couldnt get on with the E60. My father had one for a bit after his E39 got a bit old, when the time came to change it for a touring a year or so later he went back to an E39 such was the general dislike for the E60.

Now very happy in F10's and F11's so it wasn't even a nostalgia thing. The E60 was bizarrely styled, suspectly trimmed inside and just doesn't feel quite like an E39. And as you've mentioned just what on earth were they doing with the climate control?

The F10, by contrast, feels like the natural successor to the E39.

Marmite Monster, forget the E61 and buy my F11 535i manual. It's up for sale in the classifieds unless the advert has expired. Not checked to see as I'm in no major rush to sell, it's just that the wife wants me to!

I may join soon!

My nephew had a 325ti, but became a dad in April so had to change it for a Touring - ended up with an Imola Red 325 Sport.

I still have my 325ti, but keep looking at 330i Tourings. As practical as the hatch is, a Touring would be so much more practical - I just need to find the right one!

OP - I got your email but my reply was bounced - might want to check your detailing email address.

WRT mine - I ran it for 3 years and 65k it was a peach, but sold it about 5 months ago. I did hear from the guy who bought it, he said he wasn't getting on with it and did I want it back (as I asked for first refusal). I didn't think he'd be getting rid that quick though and the timing wasn't right.

I've been keeping an eye on AT and PH for it but no sign yet, and there is an 'E61 V8 Bearding' thread: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... where they generally post them when they see them.

Keep your eye out.

The advert must have expired because there's 3 manual F10s and none are 535is or Tourings.

Because by every measure by which you judge a car it is superior, with the exception of climate controls and air distribution. Whoever signed that one off needs shooting.
My only real complaint there was the removal of the hot/cold air wheel that has been on BMWs forever. They reinstated it for every other model when they realised how silly they'd been.

Wasn't that the car which was grossly overpriced at £12,995 for a long time over the summer somewhere up in the North-West? Same colour, year, interior and spec, though someone has obviously put the M5 wheels and mirrors on since then (neither an improvement, imo)

What IS the story with places like that? £24k? There is absolutely nothing special about it at all - it isn't particularly low mileage - it's just a nice example of an old E39. £24k!?

If it was a box fresh example with 3k on it I'd perhaps understand a bit more but a 74k mile E39 Touring is surely worth about a quarter of that?

The E39 is one of Chris Bangles greatest achievements.
Is it now? Well I guess you are paying a certain amount for the dealers expert knowledge on the car...

M5 visuals? It's an e39 touring? How many more clues do you want that it might not actually be an M5?

I'm pretty sure it is. I was waiting for it to bleed down to about 8 and then pay slightly too much for it, but presumably it went this way instead.
