Going to look a 1987 635CSi
Discussion
so was there a colour mis-match on the offside,or was it a trick of the light?
the sunroof not quite shutting properly shouldn't result in water being dumped in a footwell-any water getting past the sunroof should end up channelled down the drainpipes within the pillars and down into sills.
if these things are constructed like e30's then a wet front footwell is probably caused by rust problems either in bulkhead,or screen surround,or "jacking-pad" behind front wheel-all cost big money to repair properly.
or maybe the o/s sill-drains are blocked and water that should flow out is overflowing into passenger compartment-my e30 had an inch or two of water sloshing around in the o/s sill when i bought it.
looks a corker of a car from the pix.

So I went to have a look at in on the weekend at
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/272454015082
Very nice overall but a couple of things to note.
The sunroof doesn't look like it closes fully which could be the cause of the biggest issue I found, a soaking wet drivers footwell carpet by the accelerator pedal.
There is also:
No service history at all
A chip and dent in the front chrome bumper
The wheels are the old style so when it needs new tyres would be best to get other wheels
Heater blew cold from the front facing vents when set to hot, window and foot heaters did blow hot
Drivers side rear window did not go down and all the other windows were lazy but that will be because its been sitting probably
Engine was quite tappety even after a 30 min drive
But it looked great for the age and drove well. At the very least I know I want a 635CSi!!
Sounds like another tired old BMW.http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/272454015082

The noisy top end means it's a no go. M30 cams are BMW only at £400. Then you have 12 rockers, four rocker shafts, gaskets etc. Parts alone are £1200 plus two days labour to remove the head, weld up the inevitable corrosion, skim it, fight to get the old rocker shafts out - it's £2500 to fix that, probably more. The chances of it being 'just the tappets' are remote.
E24's eat money. If you can do your own work they're not so bad but you will be surprised how quickly these can generate big bills.
I hope you find a good one OP.
They must be one of the best looking BMWs ever!
Still remember a mate of mine having a manual one back in the mid-80s in that orangey-red colour they did, when I had my first Capri 2.8i (well he was a barrister, I worked for an insurance company)!
He left a lovely pair of black lines when he left!
I've wanted one ever since, but doubt it will happen now.

Nice looking car but rear suspension mount needed welding 8 years ago and it's unlikely to have got better with age.
M30 engines are bad for top end wear due to neglectful owners, blocked oil spray bars and breaking rockers. Cat do cams at reasonable money and it's easy to liberate more power.
Front wings are big money, even for pattern items. Take your time and buy the least rusty car you can find.

The heater vents blowing cold straight ahead is normal same as E34 its a Teutonic thing!
Carpet wet could be sunroof drains blocked , window switches are prone to failing and are easy to source wheels and tyres dead easy to sort at anything from £ to ££££s
Don't sound too bad if the price is right you might even turn up some history with the VIN at BMW dealer?

I could try BMW. They filled in some gaps with an E46 I bought with no history a couple of years ago. BMW UK can tell you which main dealer it was with and then the main dealer gave me the details. I even got a new service book and posted it to them to stamp and send back, was very impressed.Carpet wet could be sunroof drains blocked , window switches are prone to failing and are easy to source wheels and tyres dead easy to sort at anything from £ to ££££s

Also, be aware that it'll need new tyres if it has been sitting that long. These wore metric TRXs originally (although perhaps a previous owner has swapped to different wheels). The last time I looked, TRX tyres were circa £375 per corner.
My 635 came on a set of 18's 'M' Parallels, which looked very 'Bling'I tried to source for a set of metric 'BBS' wheels and tyres to revert back to original, but was put off by the price.
I finally settled on a set of 16 inch 'BBS's, that gave the standard look without the unrealistic price tag.
