530i or 530/535d?
Discussion
Facelift 530i will get better MPG than a pre-facelift 535d, not sure how much better the 530d was over the 535d in that regard, but the mpg on the 535d was always pretty pants.
I remember being lent a 645i when my 535d was in at BMW and thought "Christ, if I only get 26mpg from the 535d what is this going to be? 12mpg or something??"
By the time I handed it back it was showing 23mpg, so not much in it at all.
Now, the 535d was really poor mpg wise rather than me saying 24mpg is good, but still was pretty impressed how close it was to the diesel.

My pre facelift 535d averaged 33mpg. My post facelift LCI variant averaged around 37mpg.I remember being lent a 645i when my 535d was in at BMW and thought "Christ, if I only get 26mpg from the 535d what is this going to be? 12mpg or something??"

Both are SEs - and significantly outside of the O/Ps budget?
I'd personally be looking for an M Sport car, and IMHO the 5 is better suited to an auto box.
Terribly sorry, saw no mention of budget, still don't for that matter. The one I was referring to is an M Sport and from experience I feel the manual box is the better of the two on a high mileage car, unless you spend all day in traffic.I'd personally be looking for an M Sport car, and IMHO the 5 is better suited to an auto box.

Also, hes talking about an estate car....
Yes, each to their own on the gearbox front. The LCI auto gearbox is a peach and matched well to either the 530i / d or 535d. Just not a fan of manuals on big saloons, personally.
Also, if he goes for a 535d, we wouldnt have any choice...

He talks about being tempted by one at £5,900. Both the 535is are almost twice that, but i guess thats not to say his budget isnt flexible.

I agree the LCI auto box is extremely good, however I wouldn't want to be faced with the bills if it went wrong at higher mileages. Also, hes talking about an estate car....
