Somewhat off topic but I said before that one of the cars I'm considering is the Audi S4. I test drove one last week and liked the drive very much, the car was quick, handled well and sounded good.

Sounds crazy but I have a real problem with the interior, all nicely appointed but why no cover for the cup holders??? This makes it look unfinished imo:-

Lucky it had cup holders at all. A friends RS7 has no rear cup holders or folding mirrors. Optional on a £80k+ car?!?!?

It's not like the tech in a late M5 isn't good though, is it? I have a 2015 F10 and it feels thoroughly modern and up to date inside.
Tech on the F10 is getting on a bit. If he new model follows the current 7 series then it will be moving on by a generation.

(I would still have the M5 though...)

The G30 does feel like a brand new car when you're sitting in it, like it's gone up another level. Can definitely see why people are choosing it over the E class Merc. Sat in the new one last week and it doesn't compare. Whatever I get will only be used as a daily but it would be nice to have the M5's power on tap. As far as residuals go I can see late F10's dropping a fair bit in a couple of years when there's plenty of used G30's available.

Even if it was a G30 520d?/what point does it not become clear?

As it happens I had a poke around a G30 as well. OP I think you summed it up on the previous page - "Keep thinking I might regret choosing tech over performance though"

If I were you the deciding factor would be how many years you plan on keeping it/running it. If it's your regularly changed DD then I'd probably go G30 as the new toys etc are quite cool and the novelty factor will see it through. But if it's going to be longer it would be the F10 M5. The standard G30 interior finish with plastic dash and rubbish Dakota leather isn't a patch on the Merino leather in the M5 + the fancy M multifunction seats (and you get a HUD as standard). Lest we forget, straight line performance comparisons aside, hydraulic power steering and none of this RFT malarky etc. Comes down to priorities and usability really - tech, xDrive v V8 petrol, handling, steering etc. The tech in the new car will get old and become obsolete whereas the stuff you may appreciate in the M5 is harder to emulate going forwards.

LOL After I wrote it, I thought I really should have said what engine because there will be a plum who assumes a 520d could be used an an alternative to a f10 M5 LOL.

Just kidding, but seriously a 530d X drive or 540i X drive would be more than enough on the roads compared to an F10 M5.
Tech wise its leaps ahead, people forget the F10 is now a 7 year old model. In the car industry/tech world that is a loooong time.

HHOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLD THE BUS! lets compare like with like here. Standard seats in the F10 m5 are pants, RFT are away with on most wheel options on the G30 (still hardly an excuse not to pick/not pick a car, just change them).
Yes HUD is an added option on the G30 however it is again worlds apart from the old one.

Dont get me wrong, I have LOVED the F10 M5 since it was out and tried many a time to buy one etc but a new model is out and its bloody good.

The HUD on the G30 is pretty impressive, makes the F10 one look archaic. I'm not buying this car for performance really, would just be nice to have a few extra horses available. Have the LP560 for brutal acceleration, but always seem to be in a dd when I want/need it most. Was in our 320i Tourer yesterday when some tea-bag was arsing around in front of us. A few cars managed to get past him but I had no chance, especially four up.

Haha, I thought I might rattle a few cages. If OP is looking at used M5s, chances are he'll find one with the M M-F seats (like the one he linked earlier). Are RFTs gone though? I recall reading (and rejoicing) they were dropping them but the configurator has them listed as standard.

Regardless, my overall point still stands, you are paying for tech geekery (at this price point) with respect to the (diesel) G30. And you are paying for performance, handling, noise, overall 'specialness' on the used M5. I'd like to think the tech geekery will get old vs the pros of the used M5, and therefore, it would come down to how long you are going to keep it.

All moot now anyway as OP has said he's not really looking to buy for performance but looking for grunt beyond the 4 pots so regardless of time horizon a techy spec 6pot G30 wins out in the OP's circumstances. Get it ordered, and look forward to hearing your thoughts!

....You should probably try the F10 M5 anyway though, you know, for comprehensive market research purposes hehe

I'm due to test drive the G30 and a 340 tomorrow.

There seems to be plenty of pre registered 3's at the dealers which is tempting. Is there any way of searching these cars for a specific spec?

Let me know how it goes with the G30. Surprised you're getting a drive in one so soon. What model, do you know?

It was a 520d so no performance but beautiful inside & out with great technology.

I loved the disguise, you'd never know it was a BMW with the badge covered like that. hehe

Yes to both.

If I order now I can get in by March so avoiding the road tax increase.

I'm a big disappointed with the configurator. It doesn't show the park assist which can be purchased as an addition to the comfort package and worst of all I can't save any configuration. I keep being told that this is currently unavailable and that the techies are apparently working to fix it. Surely this is very important and basic stuff, it hasn't worked properly for weeks.

So I just confirmed the purchase of a 540 MSport. woohoo

I managed to re spec the dealers existing order so delivery should be late March which avoids the road tax increase.
