New G30 or late F10 M5?

My current car is a 330d Xdrive, I like Xdrive. Yes there is a lot going for the oil burner but sentiment seems to be turning against diesel. I think there could be substantial extra taxes for diesel cars in future.

Funny, we've always had diesel BMW's before also. I ordered a new 320i Sport Tourer just under a year ago which was the first petrol (excluding performance cars) that I've bought in years. Thinking it may be the same with this. 540i Xdrive is a good shout. Did you get the tech pack?

No, the tech pack contains gadgets I really don't want such as display key (cant see the point), gesture control (fun but would never use), HUD (this one was tempting). I paid for the wireless Bluetooth charging as an option.

I went for:-

Visibility package
Comfort package - plus parking assistance which is not shown on the configurator but is available
Steering wheel heating
Towbar
Split folding seats
12v sockets
Active cruise
Harmon Kardon
Remote services
Apple CarPlay

Nice. I really want the new HUD so will prob add the tech pack. Played with gesture on a 730d but the other half just laughed at me saying I looked like I was having a row with someone. Handy to cut a phone call off though. The display key was pretty cool but apparently easy to break, especially if dropped ... and they're expensive to replace. I'm going to look at one in the showroom tomorrow.

Where are you viewing the car? Reckon I can get you a test drive albeit in a 520d.

I think future blacklash against diesel will either/and be in the form of emissions zones penalising older cars (Look at the London ULEZ - it's applied to anything pre Euro 6) or taxation on newly registered cars, rather than existing ones. Sadly there is still no getting away from the fact we pay a fortune for fuel and the diesel uses less of it. If the government dealt with that, we'd see a major shift away from diesel.

That said the 540i is going to be an absolutely wonderful thing - IMHO it's a real shame they are hamstringing it with stupid XDrive only - where is the choice? I'd imagine I'll end up with a G30 530d purely because of this. I hate xDrive and do not want it. It adds nothing to a car like this for me. I appreciate others may disagree but to flat out refuse to offer an RWD 540i in the range strikes me as very odd.

I would have gone for the XDrive anyway but yes there should have been a choice. I had thought of holding on for the 550 but the car I ordered has a target delivery date of 25 March which avoid the road tax increases from 1 April.

Norfolk/Cambs border. The one they have is a 520d also. It's just in the showroom now rather than out the back covered in dirt.

It will take a long-time to turn the tide against diesel. There are some types of vehicle to which diesel will likely always work better such as boggo SUVs. Large execs also suit a diesel well IMO. Do city cars or entry 3/5 series cars really need a diesel - no, of course not. I personally would like to see the petrol engine return to the fore, but until the market can reset residual expectations, then the diesel will remain the cheaper option for most drivers. This is going to take time to adjust.

I agree with your points but this doesn't feel like the right time to be ordering a new diesel car. Also the 530d would have less power/performance than my current 335d so I went for the 540 petrol.

I agree with your points but this doesn't feel like the right time to be ordering a new diesel car. Also the 530d would have less power/performance than my current 335d so I went for the 540 petrol.

The 540d and the 550d will be coming out on the G30 possibly 9-12minths into its life just like th F10 and E60

No the 3 Turbo 550d which was LHD only in the F10 will be G30 RHD.
