Buy a good one and they're great cars
I've just bought a 318is to use as my daily driver and love it, Very little rust and most things seam to work after 170k miles
Not fast but nothing is on the daily commute.
They also have the advantage of generally cheap consumables such as brakes and tyres and are pretty easy to work on if thats what you looking for.

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned rust...
Rust.
Rust.
But find a good one, get it inspected before you commit, and enjoy it. Parts supply through BMW, ECP, GSF etc is very, very good.
A couple of years back I had a low-miles, well-kept 320i auto as my London runabout - a really classy, comfortable way to get around. Not quick and a bit thirsty, but hey...

I suspect you've missed the boat in terms of finding cheap ones. E30 values have been on the rise for a while.
As above, body and rust are key. Mech parts are plentiful and there is a thriving second hand market. If you can get a good rust free shell, you're laughing (and lucky!)
325i is (imo) the pick of the bunch. Don't dismiss cabrios, lovely summer cruising machines.
For all things E30 you want to get yourself over to here: http://www.e30zone.net/
Best of luck.
