I had the money waiting to pay but I was curious so I had a go at seeing how low I could get them. I got them to 7.6% about this time last year. Ended up getting a personal loan instead once I realised my bank (HSBC) did it for 3.3%! Left my original money where it was as it was beating 3.3% where it was at the time.

I bought an AUC BMW X6 6 months or so ago - it was exactly 3 years old, 40D engine and list price including the extensive options was £58k

The dealer had it at £28k but I could pick up similar for £26k at Big Motoring World (with maybe not quite as many options)

When I viewed the car, and after subsequent test drive, I got the old 'there's lots of interest in the car and your best putting a deposit down now' sales pitch but I walked away. It was a great car but I felt we could get cheaper elsewhere.

I basically took screenshots of potential X6's that I was going to buy and emailed the sales guy and said 'I'm going to buy one of these but if you can give me the car for £26k I'll buy it off you. He called me back later and said - look, I can't go to £26k but I can do £26.5k

I replied and said that I'll do the £26.5k if you can double the warranty to 2 years. He replied no, but I can do it at bottom price of £300 for a 2 year warranty.

Effectively, I paid only marginally more than what I could get the car for from a non-approved dealer with the added bonus of getting 2 years warranty.

It was a very simple experience with no real tough haggling as such - I basically proposed what I was willing to pay and once we agreed a price, I then put the final cherry on the cake with negotiating a warranty. I'm not saying this approach will work for everyone but it was a great outcome for us with no hassle and no standing in showrooms, battling over prices etc....
