Have a 1994 automatic cabriolet with what I suspect is a faulty coil, difficult to start, Rev counter bouncing all over and very
low on power. I have no code reader and due to the battery now being very close to discharged no way of getting car to a garage. If I were to remove each coil pack individually would there be any tell tale evidence on the suspected failed one?

TIA.

In answer to your question. No.

On way of trying to identify it if it is a coil/spark plug issue would be to remove the plug on the coil in turn & see which ones do/do not change the way it runs.

Having said that it is more likely to be an air leak in the concertina boot between the throttle & MAF, these always split & have similar symptoms, as would a vacuum leak from anywhere in the same area.

Had similar symptoms on my old 325i coupe and it turned out to be the cam sensor. Idle speed all over the place and car would, stall when coasting out of gear. Cam and crank sensors are known failure items on these cars so I'd check them first, then for air leaks/holed inlet pipework.

Thanks, will check for air leaks first, also air filter while I'm there.
Have found a local Garage that is willing to come and carry out a Diagnostic test, so hopefully may be able to
pin point the problem.
Incidentally, have been looking on Realoem for the Crankshaft Position Sensor and it doesn't appear to be there, even when
I do a search on there for it.

Wonder if the below could be partly to blame for my non starting engine problem

Seems very underpowered for my car.

Btw, checked all rubber boots and all ok.

Sorry it was the cam sensor on my car not the crank sensor. If your car has one it's a small black thing just under the VANOS solenoid at the front of the cam cover. Not sure if failure causes a fault code or not.

My 325 also had an undersized battery when I bought it but did not seem to cause any running issues, but I did keep it topped up with a trickle charger when the car wasn't used often.

If it is diagnosed as a coil pack that's failed you might as well replace all 6, if one has gone it won't be long before another fails.

I made this mistake on our E91 and we had three fail in a year so I ended up replacing all 6
