Has anyone any thoughts on what's useful in Apple Play or the general tech interface, and what it's worth spending the time finding out about?

I picked up the M2 yesterday and have been fiddling around but not really found my way around so well yet. The salesman suggested that the preset buttons can be used for "anything", such as for a navigation destination; is that right, and if so, how do you do it?

Regarding the preset buttons, if you just lightly touch them they tell you what each is assigned to.

For example, you could go through the 'phone menu, look up your partners number, and then press and hold button 1. Then anytime you want to call your partner, just press 1.

Ditto, tune in to your favourite radio station and press and hold 2 and that'll be a shortcut to turn on the radio and go to the radio station.

Perhaps you want to program the nav with your home postcode? Do that, then go to recent destinations and find the entry for home and press and hold 8.

It's pretty useful.

Mine has wireless charging and Apple car play. I was surprised and rather disappointed to learn that I need to change the cover of my IPhone 6 to use wireless charging. I also read that if I'm using wireless charging I can't use Apple car play, does anybody here know ?

Thanks. I've been out tonight and had a sit in it and played with the settings. I was starting to fill the buttons up with radio stations, somchanged it somthat 1 is favourite stations, 2 is recent destinations, and three is Apple Play. I'm sure that I'll think of others as I go along.

I tried using Siri for the navigation, which was quite good, and I'll take some CDs to rip to the hard drive next time out.

Wireless CarPlay has been enabled on iPhones for a while now, but as far as I am aware there is only an aftermarket Alpine headuinit (US market only) that uses it. To use normal CarPlay you need to connect to the car with a Lightning cable.

From having used both wireless and normal CarPlay I prefer wired for anything longer than a 15 minute drive, as wireless CarPlay is a real battery drain. However, I found it really useful on my short commute.

The wireless charging in your car will be aimed at the various Android devices which support it, Apple is rumoured to be including in on their next iPhone.

Thanks for that. It's very early days but CarPlay seems a bit wierd. I managed to connect my IPhone with CP then connected Mrs BC's which disconnected mine. Every time I reconnected it defaulted to the bloody satnav. Aaagghhhh.

Also with CP connected I'm unable to access the contacts in my phone thru the car Bluetooth, I have to use CP which is slow.

iOS 10.3, which was released yesterday has some CarPlay improvements, so may be worth updating your devices.

I'll do the update but I'm a bit peed off with BMW. I understood that wireless charging would work with ApplePlay. Then they said I needed a charging case now I'm hearing it may not work together at all.

Id blame apple not bmw for that, wireless charging is a limitation of the phone, hopefully they will introduce it soon.

That may be right. BMW said that if I buy a charging case for the phone it will charge wirelessly in the car. That's great as long as CarPlay also works which seems uncertain.

I have a brand new F31 - extended bluetooth with wireless charging and Apple CarPlay. iPhone 7 using a Mophie Juice Pack Air. CarPlay works fine wirelessly and charges wirelessly too.

So far it's a bit of a love hate relationship with CarPlay. The integration isn't perfect - there are some quirks, but overall its pretty good.

That's encouraging, I will ask the 'genius' guy at BMW. I don't really want a juice pack but clearly I will need a new casing. I have an IPhone 6.

That is one of our competitors systems, so I haven't tried that one out. I can't see why the wireless CarPlay and wireless charging wouldn't work together. It is a bit naughty of BMW saying it would work with an iPhone, as so far no iPhone has come enabled for wireless charging.

Can you see your phone contacts through the car Bluetooth or do you have to make calls through CP?

You have to choose in settings, you can't have both. Either upload your contacts and use the BMW interface, or choose to use the phone and contacts through CarPlay.

FWIW, Siri is much better than the BMW voice assistant in my experience. Press and hold the voice button for two seconds and you get Siri.

I view it as more logical to use CarPlay as you are interfacing directly with the phone.

Got it, thanks. So when I connect Mrs BC's phone I need to set her's up on CarPlay also?

I had thought I could do mine on CP and hers on the BMW interface.

I have the new idrive and Apple CarPlay and to be honest think I've wasted £230

The BMW standard pro nav pretty much does everything apple car play does equally as well but doesn't use apple maps.

If you use apple CarPlay to navigate and touch your phone you automatically lose what you see on the nav screen. So for example you're navigating and your passenger picks up your phone to check an email.....you lose your map screen. Or maybe on the school run your little angel plays a game.....you lose your apple screen and it all changes.

The navigation is not as intuitive as the BMW set up and I really don't understand currently where the product sits in a BMW.

I have a Mophie wireless case for my iPhone 7 and have a magnetic docking pad sitting infront of the gear stick in my X5 and that works well. I can't use the BMW charging setup because the phone it too big to fit in the tiny section on its side within the armrest but I understand that's changed in the new 5 series.

Apple CarPlay?

I wouldn't bother at the monent.
