Morning all

I noticed on the weekend that the 12v socket is dead. It illuminates when the lights are on (suggesting power is getting to it) but it fails to charge my phone etc.

I've taken a look at the list of fuses but I can only see a fuse (45) for the illumination. Is the power on another fuse? Does anyone know what number it is? The owners manual is a little vague in its description.

If it's the 12v socket in the oddments tray, the fuse you're looking for is located in the fuse box under the passenger footwell carpet. It's stuck down with particularly 'robust' double-sided tape & you'll need a Torx driver to get the panel off. Once you've done that, from memory it's Fuse 11, but you'll need to double-check that.

When I got my car, I believe the socket was lit but had no power - replacing the fuse fixed it.

Note that on mine (2006) the fuse was not the one the handbook said it was - in fact, I think the handbook said it was "spare". I had to search to find the correct fuse number (I didn't think it was 11, thought it was something like 56 but it was a couple of years ago).

Right, cracked it! Fuse 55 (marked in the attached photo)

biggrin Indeed! It's marked as Spare on the fuse map - not very helpful!!!

Weird - I replaced mine a few months back and it wasn't denoted as a spare in the manual. Seem to recall it wasn't clearly listed as "ciggy lighter" but was about second row down about 5 from the right? Cant remember location number and the markings are almost braille rather than readable anyway..

Sorry to hijack your thread however I didn't think it was worth starting a fresh one. Does anyone know if the 12V socket has constant power when the ignition is off? I have a dash cam which I'm to paranoid to leave in the socket in case it drains my battery.

No it doesn't. Switches off with ignition.

I used an "add a fuse" (http://www.halfords.com/technology/car-audio/stereo-fitting-accessories/autoleads-blade-add-a-fuse) to take a feed in the passenger footwell using the fuse in question to add a dash camera and a speed camera detector.

I might yet add a voltage protector and actually swap the camera so it feeds from a permanent live feed to let the camera record whilst parked up - the voltage protector will cut power before it risks dropping to a level whereby the car is incapable of starting.

The in car one is switched on the ignition - the boot 12v socket is permanently live by the way.

If it is for a dash cam I would just plonk in one of these add a fuse's from the aux socket fuse in the footwell and run the cable around the windscreen surround - will avoid having a horrid cable running all over the car to where the cig lighter is positioned in a V8V.

My glovebox 12v socket is definitely permanently live.

I tried running a dash cam to it, but ended up hard wiring it to a different circuit because i obviously didn't want a constant live.

I also use it to plug in my battery conditioner.

Hi,
Jfyi I blew the fuse just because a small screw fell into the cigarette lighter. I guess the same may happen with coins, so be careful smile

Same here - I plug my trickle charger into the socket on the centre console which is permanently live.

The reason why the plastic cover exists for when its not in use.

Justin/Davek - is it a case the later cars have an aux socket in the glove box that has a permanent live feed?

There is no socket in my glove box (or if there is, I haven't noticed it) - but then my car is a 56 plate with the "old" seats so doesn't count as new I guess. But my lighter socket in the centre is definitely permanently live.

My current one is 2012, but my previous 2010 also had permanent live in the centre console. So don't think it's age related

Yes mine also seems to be permanently live. It's a MY06 so it could be that it's only on earlier cars.

Apologies for the thread resurrection, but I thought I might as well add to an existing thread on the same subject, rather than start a new one.

Finally got round to setting up a vent-mounted phone charger, but was a bit miffed to find no power from the centre console fag lighter.

I've just opened up the passenger footwell to get to the fuse box and fuse 55 is intact

Any thoughts?

I can't see how to get at the back of the fag lighter - it I can lift the centre console, I can at least check for power to the connectors.
