My E90 recently started playing up and now fails to start.

It started a few days ago with struggling to crank. The cranks were getting further apart. If it has been driven for a bit, it makes the starting easier, but there was obviously a problem.
The problem then seemed to get worse with us having to press the start button 2/3 times before if kicked into life.

I went to start it up this morning and i am not even getting a crank. Just a hum for a few seconds. It does occasionally make some gurgling horrible noise when it is supposed to be cranking which is rather concerning.

The only other thing that seemed to happen at the same time is a warning light appeared for what i believe to be an intermittent bulb failure ?

Having read through some posts, i am seeing battery / starter motor / fuel pump / ecu problem. Just hoping someone could hopefully put my symptoms to a cause as i really cant afford the expense frown

If it's struggling to crank I would say it is battery.

If it's cranking but not starting I'd say fuel pump.

Start with testing the battery. Then hope the timing chain hasn't slipped or snapped.

My mum's 2006 330d failed to turn over last week - was the starter motor.

Instinct says battery problems, hence why after a drive (and charge) it started to ok. It would also explain intermittent faults showing.

New battery would be my first port of call.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I tried to jump it, but nothing happened, so ended up calling the AA. He went straight for battery, but it was fully charged, although he noticed the connections were massively corroded as water had collected in the battery compartment (common problem i was told). After changing them, it was no change, so it has been dragged to a garage with suspected starter motor problems.

We shall see what happens when they ring this morning.
