Hi

I couldn't find anything on the net on this issue.

Last two fill-ups, my car has smelt of petrol. The smell clears after a couple of gallons. It smells inside and out. During this time the car occasionally splutters and has stalled. However once the smell has gone, the rough running also disappears. No warning lights come on.

Any likely culprits? Is the rough running coincidental?

Thanks

Search for fuel filler neck issues as iirc there is a problem with the breathers leaking fuel when the tank is full

As the last post, fuel filler pipes can have a hole in, also high pressure injectors can fail on those.

Just to close this item.

Took my 330i Coupe into BMW for an MOT yesterday. When I dropped it off, noticed a recall was due. (My car had not been to BMW since about 2011, but serviced every year at a specialist)

The recall was new injectors and new coils. The injectors have now been replaced (coils in a couple of weeks) but this 'seems' to have solved the issues.

And passed the MOT with one advisory (front tyre) smile

Hi Mike,

I have a 330i/N53 in the E91 (2008 LCI) and haven't heard about this recall. I was aware of the injector/coil/HPFP issues with the N53 and that BMW was offering to replace these components when they had failed, but not on a precautionary basis, as your post would seem to suggest? What year is your E92 and how did the dealer raise the recall issue with you please?

Cheers
Nigel

You sure injectors were replaced? The quality enhancement cough recall was on coils only and that was around 2013 iirc.

Injectors are currently index 11 on that engine. Be interesting to see what yours are at if you can be bothered whiping off the cover for a look for us..

I was a little surprised too. Mine is a late 2007 (57 plate), but as stated mine has not been to BMW since 2010- 2011, so has probably missed any work/ recalls as it has been outside the network. Mine is low mileage (51k), but this should have no influence, surely?

The dealership had not looked at the car to diagnose injector/ coil issues, but when booking the MOT I did ask for an intermittent EML and some running issues when the fuel tank was full, to be looked at. The recall stamp was on the paperwork when I arrived to drop the car off for MOT.

The other odd thing is I am only the second owner - so getting in touch with the original owner 'should' have been quite simple for BMW??

When I drop the car off for the coils, I will probe a little further to see what VIN numbers/ criteria are used for my 'recall'.

I will try to ask about what injectors were fitted too. (Sorry cannot be bothered taking my daily apart for this - I have too much on-going work to do on my T25......)

Thanks Mike. I stopped taking my car to a main dealer after I was shafted in 2014, and no mention of recalls then either. When I asked the supplying dealer when I bought it if i could have a detailed service history for the previous (and first) owner, I was refused, citing the DPA. So have no idea if any of this work was ever previously undertaken. I now regularly add a can of BMW Fuel additive and use only Shell V-Power fuel to try and ward off waking any expensive gremlins from hibernation!

That would be interesting to know, thanks. As i've always kept up the BMW Warranty, I'm relying on that to deal with any of these issues curatively speaking, but I'd rather not have them in the first place, preventively speaking.

Me bad, sorry to mislead everyone but the injectors were not replaced after all, there was simply an item to check the injectors in the recall notice. There were no reported issues with them. Not sure if they would be replaced FOC if there was an issue?? The service desk personnel do not seem that knowledgeable..... frown

I have had the ignition coils replaced under recall though.

Whilst in, BMW completed some diagnostics, and the NOx sensor is throwing some errors. They quoted £480 to replace.

So, my question is, will the ignition coil replacement potentially solve the NOx errors being thrown up? I will wait and see if my EML comes on again or not before committing to replacing the NOx sensor. The EML only comes on when cold on a morning, about once a fortnight. Stopping and restarting clears the EML.

Doubt it.

When my nox sensor fails I'll probably get a emulator. Some chap in Poland making them I believe.

I believe if the Nox sensor fails, it simply restricts the car from running in stratified mode, hence your MPG on a motorway cruise won't be as good.

It doesn't impact the car in terms of performance, hence why it doesn't throw a EML and creates a code instead.

Don’t worry about about the NOx sensor code. Most cars have it stored. It can often be cleared with an Italian decoke.
