BMW should really include something for checking drain holes in the service schedules for these, as if they are not kept clean, this kinda thing happens, same on e93. This could be avoided in part if there was an annual check at the least. I think the back ones go under the skirt and mud flap so part of that needs to come off, it's not something you want to be doing yourself.

I had the big fish tank leak in my 65 plate Alpina D4 convertible. Garage had to strip the car to dry it, replace amp, under seat subwoofers etc.
Then 3 months later I had the A Pillar drip of doom. Garage changed the seals around the screen
All done without fuss and under warranty by the local (very good) garage.
I’ve taken the extended warranty now, wouldn’t dare be without it.

I’ll get the seals done when it goes in for MOT in May 🙂

My wife has a 2015 BMW 2 Series convertible with a very wet boot. Local BMW dealership failed to solve the problem twice under warranty. Now out of warranty...anyone got similar problems? Ideas?

My wifes M235i convertible has a damp boot as well. I think the water is getting in behind the black trim where the roof meets the body of the car. It's on the cover that comes up when you open the roof. I've taken it off and cleaned all the parts and sealed each bolt with some silicone sealant round the bolt and on the washer of the nut. Hopefully this will have done the trick. Thats the only way the water could be getting in that area. Will let you know how we get on.

Is it worth getting a half car cover for the wet winter months?

My 2017 420d convertible is just out of warranty and water is sloshing around in the roof void. It’s with BMW today to investigate and they will speak to BMW regarding warranty. Sadly, I’m not expecting great things.
More over, after 30yrs of owning convertibles, this is the first time I’ve had this issue, let’s hope bmw do the right thing!

Not a boot leak but a rear window stopped working on our 2015 warranteed 435d cab - initially we were told it was being done under warranty work but then informed it was not considered warranty work as water had filled the side pocket as the drain had got blocked.

TLDR = car had always been under warranty and full main dealer service history so BMW UK agreed to fund the full repair under warranty.

If its any consolation my 430d went into BMW Centre two weeks ago and they carried out the modification as per BMW Tech Bulletin,(def a known problem) Basically modify the drain tube ends and drill a 10mm hole each side on sill. This took about an hour and a half. . Appears to have worked a treat. Washed car with a hose plenty of water . It ran out both sides, front and rear for about three/four mins then stopped.

BMW 435d Convertible 65 plate. Water sloshing about in panel behind the driver which eventually drowned the entertainment system in the boot. Had it fixed under warranty in 2017 (£2000) Has now happened again! Of course its 6 months out of warranty. All sorts of electrical warning lights and failures. Waiting to see what Stratstone Chesterfield are going to say. How many times can you go back if the warranty fix keeps failing? I didn't sign up for a £2K repair bill every 18 months when I bought it. I'll keep you posted.

Hello, I have the same issue as the above & was hoping there may be someone on here that has managed to resolve their situation? If anyone took it down the legal route or had any luck with the motor obusmun. TIA

Hello! Have you had any problems since the modification?

Thankyou

We have a 2017 440i that has had water sloshing around in the way described here, and last week the speakers stopped working. I only wish I had found this thread before the speakers were affected. :-( Now to find a BMW dealership that is familiar with the issues and the fix.

That video is damning evidence about the design of the drain holes, would suggest anyone with sloshing water sounds takes car to dealers and insist they do that before they leave car.
Video it and cant see BMW being able to wiggle there way out of paying to correct including any damage that water has done.
Dont know if any lawyers on here but if we were in USA someone would be starting a class action

I've never known a convertible that doesn't have some sort of an issue with drain holes eventually, never owned a BMW convertible but plenty of experience with MX-5, Porsche and even a Chevrolet and they all had the same issues of blocked drain holes at some point.

In the case of this car it is the drain plug thro which the water flows out getting blocked uo- poor design but simple addition to maintenance schedule to check exit holes of drain holes would have been a very simple solution.

My E46 convertible that lived outside for most of its life never had this problem but my E91 has drain holes at rear under bonnet with a grid to catch crap. It doesn't work well if car in high pollen/wet leave environment. Take grills out then direct flush into drain hole will get all crud out of the pipe. underneath to the rear of the front wing

4 series convertible 2017-2019 drain issue - causing amplifier damage

I'm in the process of compiling information for a potential legal case regarding a design flaw in the drainage plug of the 4 Series convertible, leading to water accumulation and subsequent damage to amplifiers and window motors. Before proceeding with the case, I'd like to gauge the extent of this issue within the community. I've personally owned two BMW 4 Series vehicles, and both experienced water damage to the amplifiers, necessitating replacements. Has anyone else encountered similar problems with their 4 Series convertibles?

Not amplifier problems but a rear window regulator got drowned and killed due to a blocked drain hole leading to a non-operable roof - initial response from BMW dealer was 'tough luck, drain holes aren't covered by warranty, big bills coming your way' which rapidly changed to parts and labour completely covered by BMW UK as a 'goodwill gesture' when it was pointed out that the car was only ever serviced by them and still had their full warranty.

Drain holes were enlarged by BMW at the same time as the regulator was replaced and my excellent Indy now checks they are clear every time the car is up in the air.

No issues since then - touch wood.
