Recently purchased a E61 535d with a few nice options. One being HUD.

Before seeing the car, the dealer did say it wasn't working and would cost quite a bit for him to fix, I'd imagine it's quite a chunk in labour cost as it seems to be a dash out job.

The car isn't showing a fault with it on the CCC system, so not sure it's throwing fault codes but pressing the hud button does nothing.

Does anyone have any experience with hud not playing ball? Before I start taking things apart.

Second issue (potentially) is that there's a very annoying whine in the cabin when driving. Just had the gearbox serviced as it had never been done, but that hasn't cured it. What are the pulleys and belts like on these? Can't think what else it would be?

Car drives spot on apart from those niggles.

I have exactly the same issue on my E61 - HUD was working fine when I got it but then one day just stopped working. HUD on/off button doesn't have any effect, no errors being picked up. Fuses in the boot all look fine. I can't see any movement from the flap that's supposed to open/close when looking down into the HUD from above and there's no LED illumination that I can see either. I've not had the dash out but removed the speedo/rev counter unit and couldn't see any loose cables or anything obvious, I gave up after that as not keen on taking the dash out to sort it at the minute banghead

Have you pressed the HUD button beside the knob that turns the headlights on? That disables it.

Failing that it sounds like it isn't getting power so check your fuses and that the loom is live.

Another thing could be a previous owner was screwing around with the coding and has somehow removed the HUD option from the car and disabled it.

I'm presuming that it's constantly on then (or should be) untill you press the button by the headlamps?

I've been in the settings on the system which allows you to turn different things off on the hud like nav, speed, lane departure etc and they're all switched to on. I am due to plug it in next week with a friend of mine, so will have a look then. Will also check fuses.

Drive belts last a long time. The main crank damper/pulley often fails past 100k miles.

My HUD was intermittent for a while, often linked to low battery. If stood for a while, the HUD would not come on for about 5-10 minutes into the next drive. Recently it failed to come on completely, no matter how charged the car was or how many times I jabbed the button.

No error codes or any other clue, so tried a new battery, which did not solve it. Sadly I had to have a new unit fitted, but they are about £100-£200 on eBay used. It is the labour thar adds up though, as the dash does need to come out.

Thanks for the info, it's definitely as dead as a dodo, there's a few guides on how to remove the dash online, so may look to tackle it one weekend.

A new gremlin has reared it's head recently. Radio and the subwoofer keeps cutting out, I resolved this by opening and closing the boot, but now that makes no difference, the new fix appears to be turning on the rear screen heater and everything works as it should. I presume this is the boot loom fault?

Just a bit unsure as to why the sub cuts out as a part of it?

Any water in the boot? Or damp carpets?

If not then I think there are known issues with the boot wiring.

Just checked the boot, bone dry, as are carpets. I don't have a pano roof though, which I think is normally the culprit of that with blocked drains.

Yup; time to peel back the rubber boot and see if there any cracked/split wires etc

Which way would people view this?

From the position of sitting in the car? (so middle sensor on drivers side) or from the position of looking at the car? (middle sensor on the pax side) don't want to take the bumper off to change the wrong sensor.

Or is it just going to be easier and replace both?

Think I just answered my own question biglaugh

They are from the driver’s seat facing forward.

Front right is your right; as you'd be sitting in the drivers seat

If I were you I'd replace the PDC sensors; they're not expensive and sometimes when one goes down it can take others as well; no matter what Carly says etc

Or more correctly, from behind the car looking forward.

So, in trying to improve my E61 I purchased some comfort seats.

Having read up, watched videos etc I do know they're would be some re-wiring to do as mine are only half electric at the moment.

The seats were in a really bad state and had been sat around in a workshop for a while.

One clean, one not.

The leathers in a pretty poor state, so I was going to see these as a bit of a project to restore before tackling the wiring.

until.

Ah. They're not Cream Beige. I've found a few websites that sell kits to recolour leather and vinyl, but I'm really struggling to find a paint code for the plastic trims, it seems you can only buy Cream Beige leather paint. Would that work on plastics?
