I think this car, and all others like it are awesome, save for the occasional hideous bodykit!

I belong to another forum and a chap on their has put an E39 M5 V8 into his E30 classic BMW shell! He is currently in the process of dropping the BMW V12 from an old 7 series into an E30 touring as well as a few other "projects" on the way!

I myself have an old E30 touring and I wish to convert the engine so I have a real sleeper of a car that puts a smile on my face!

Most of the fun for me comes from taking a good ingredient from the manufacturer (read: big engine) and then add it to another good ingredient (a well setup chassis) and seeing how you yourself can physically fit and make those parts work together and stick a whacking great grin on your face everytime you drive it!

I guess this is what these tuning firms do, clearly on a larger scale, and if they can get customers for these contraptions then that has surely got to be a result not only for the tuner, but for the marketplace too!

Well done Nick, really a great read. Made me want the car whatever it was, love dthe enthusiasm, pitch perfect, none of the basics we didn't care about like tyre size, just all about how you felt about it - the auto-emotive-response!

I'll take one in flat dark blue, no kit and badged as a 116i

Let's be honest; the 1 series is probably the least cool car on the planet. It has no sense of humour and it is utterly, utterly bottom of the range. For the kind of money this Hartge mutant costs, you could get a third hand Italian exotic and pose with the best of them. And that is why this is such a magnficient car; amazing dynamics, requires skill to drive and looks like a turd. Anyone who buys one is a hero.

It's the whole park it anywhere hyper-performance car thing again. Shame I think the 1 Series is without a doubt the ugliest car ever to be created, as the concept is fantastic. I'd still consider one though as it does sound like it's a cracking performance car, regardless of what the base product is.

Juat a quick aside, how do you pronounce Hartge? Is it more Harj or more Hart-Gu?
