What a really plain looking car, it's not interesting enough to be ugly.

I have to say it looks to be pretty quick and clearly handles well, but to be honest....it's just another beemer, same ole, same ole.

Wonder how it would stack up against a Monaro VXR 500...certainly won't sound as good and I bet a supercharged 6litre would make that things torque figures appear puny. Not far off the same cost either, especially after paying for all the "optional" extras on the BM.

imo, a one year old E46 M3 at £33k makes much more sense.

Would certainly be interesting to see how they both stack up in terms of depreciation...

BMW: $$$ biglaugh
Monaro: $eek

Will be the silver model winner once the new M3 is out.

With this kind of performance from the more mundane model imagine what the M3 will be like.

Back end looks like a Bristol Blenheim to me. And that's no complement.

I just test drove a new 335i it was fast and smooth but ended up buying a CSL for 34K at Sytner's. Just figured that in three years the coupe will be common as muck (like the current one) and the CSL will still be 'special'

Couldn't agree more, the 335i maybe a nice new model from a popular manufacurer, but the M3 CSL is rare, and will only get rarer. I would make the same choice... if I had £34K burning a hole in my sky rocket!

My thoughts exactly, it is so, so plain, just no styling at all.

Nice one, rob!

I like the cut of your jib on that one.

Only ever seen one CSL (visitor to the car park at work), and I spent - ooh - minutes admiring it's cut slicks.......

Seriously though. I love the CSL.

Bangs per buck? Hoooooeeeeeee!!!

Boring, ubiquitous, unimaginative, uninspiring?

I don't think so: classy, sleek and subtle, quietly elegant.

The driver blends into obscurity which is a good thing because in next to no time they will be loping around, enjoying a significant slice of superbly wrought, road based hoon pie.

Wouldn't do it myself but let's not be too dismissive of that which renders so accessible such broad automotive (i.e. driving) merit.

BMW have this habit of producing non-M variants which historically, can serve up substantial proportions of - and in some cases (Z4) exceed the servings of - the uber versions' repertoires.

Saw one the other day, in "spacegrau" (wonderful name...), shadowline (essential!) and 19" wheels, and have to say it looked really rather good, in fact, much better than the 3 series saloon.

Funny that we are now slating BMW for putting out a "bland, boring" model, when we have been flaming Bangle for his "controversial, ugly" models for so long...

In any case, in no hurry to get rid of my E39 panzer tank

I didn't watch it, but didn't Fifth Gear have one of these parked in a high-street somewhere for a couple of hours to gauge the public's response? It got none at all. 'Nuff said - it looks Sh1t.

It looks sh1t? Don't be an ass, it's way too subtle to attract such harsh criticism.

People didn't look at it? People probably wouldn't care for a Ferrari Dino if a Koenigsegg CCX hoved into an adjoining parking bay but would that devalue the charm of the old Enzo-lite?

Judging a car for it's ability to woo people camouflaged by turquoise sports wear probably says more about the worrier than the car itself.

Respec, innit?

Photos don't do these cars justice - I thought boring until I saw one at the dealers. Very swish and quite swift looking at the figures. Bodes well for the M3.

Actual saw one on the road today in Black, looked a little dull at the front but as it went past the rear lights looked quite good plus it had the 19inch alloys. Echos of the old 8 series from the rear I thought.

My personal thoughts are that cars with contraversial designs always look better in darker colours as they absorb some of the effect ala 7 series. Whereas gorgeous designs can wear all ala Ferrari's, Lamborghini's, New XK etc...

Bit like us 'humans' (I was going to say 'women' then but don't want to seem like a Luton Town FC Manager).

Having seen one in he flesh at a recent motor show, there's some very awkward lines on it - especially the rear 3/4. I actually felt embarrassed for anyone who's actually gone and bought one.

There is one saving grace though. As it looks so sh1t, it means it's values will shortly go the same way as the saloon (dealers offering 11% discount on new), which in turn means the previous shape coupe will also drop in value accordingly, which in turn means I'll pick up a bargain in a few months and get back to the cracking coupes I had before. I'm getting p1ssed off with Audi customer service, but I sure am not going to waste money on a new 3-Series.

Fatboy, a Zastava Yugo looks sh1t, as does a Datsun Laurel.

This forum demands a measured critique, not the crass lamentations of the plebian.

If you honestly think it's aesthetic deserving of such abject castigation then fair enough - but I would suggest you might be better received by the orcs over on www.blueneonspinners.com.
