Just called footmanjames - they won't put me on a classic policy as am under 30, so looking at £530/year - still seems high to me?

No Dan...keep trying an E28 should be an easy car to put on a Classic policy...the various companies have different policies so I'm sure you'll find someone.

Good luck.

Derin : Congrats` sir on finally getting that e28 done. bow ....fancy doing mine next hehe

dan101smith : Yep, FJ are appallingly bad for that. They said the same to me about mine.
There are other companies out there that offer `Classic/Collectors` insurance. Just open any copy of BMW Ownersclub Magazine or BMWCar magazine and I'm sure you'll find a couple in there. Alternatively a copy of practical classics should have a listing.

So, finally got the time to go and pick up the E28 from its former owner tonight - what a great car!

Quick question - it sounds a bit "tappety" to me - have these engines got the self-adjusting tappets? From the sound I'm guessing not?

Here begins the work of restoring a legend!

Dan,
Tappets are not self-adjusting on the M30 engine. A couple of possibilties:

1.Could just be the normal sound of the injectors that you're mistaking for tappet noise?

2.Many people also say (but would be good to get a proper expert opinion from someone like 'Blackspider' on this forum?) that these engines run/idle better with the valve clearances set a little bit 'loose'?

3. Valve clearances genuinely a bit out of adjustment...not too difficult to do if you're methodical

4. Genuinely worn valve-followers or camshaft! Can happen if either high mileage, poorly maintained and also if the 'spray bar' nuts have been failing to lubricate the top-end sufficiently.

But I'm not a professional BMW mechanic so I'd get (and also like to hear) their opinion.

(Actually, that was more than a 'couple' wasn't it! )

Thank you for all your kind words!

I run "bmwclassics" purely as hobby...thank God! Otherwise with the time I spend on these cars my family would starve! I am in fact by profession a surgeon.

It never fails to surprise me how much people still love the Alpina B3 I sold last March...I still get enquiries for that car. You wouldn't believe how much trouble I had selling that car at the time with people mucking me about here in the U.K! It was only after I threatened (in fact I think I actually 'did') withdraw it from sale that everyone suddenly 'came to my door' begging me to sell it to them!

Anyway, it's true I never sell my cars 'cheap'...that's not why I do this. I try to get cars up to the 'best I can' by my standards, describe them as accurately as I can and eventually the 'right' buyer recognises that and buys the car! ...And if they then keep in contact with me and tell me how they're enjoying, having problems etc...(Yes! They do happen on cars! And the real enthusiasts understand and accept that as part of owning and enjoying a 'classic')that makes it worthwhile for me. The chap who bought my last 840Ci Sport still keeps in contact and I always enjoy hearing from him! I still get 'upset' when I see a car drive off...still hope the new owner will 'look after and enjoy it' as I would have if I was keeping it. The bottom-line is I don't do this for money (without wishing to sound 'unseemly'...I can earn a shed-load more money doing my 'proper job'!)...but this is what I enjoy!

I'm similarly grateful when I read stuff like the above from enthusiasts such as you on this forum (means far more to me than some pointless plastic 'concours trophy'!).

In relation to the E28 528iSE that I currently have for sale...a motoring author who is writing a book on the complete history of the 5-Series has contacted me as he wants to feature the car in his book. Like this forum it seems to be getting praise on forums around the world now...and I'm genuinely really grateful to you guys and others:

http://bmwpower-bg.net/forums/viewtop

www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=345418&f= 72&h=0

A guy in Cyprus (also RHD) is currently discussing the purchase of the car who has a budget of £8000-9000 but may be running into import duty difficulties. Yes, it's true I don't sell my cars 'cheap'...but in the end...well, as I say on my website: "The bitterness of etc etc..."

Anyway, sincere thanks again for your kind comments...they are much appreciated!

Regards to all

Thanks John!

I've now put the car on Ebay as well.

Within less than two hours already 10 'watchers'...but the stupid questions have already started rolling in! What is it with 'buyers' in the U.K?

Have I not been clear enough in my description? Not enough pictures?

Examples:

Question: "What's the mileage?"

Question: "Has it got a supercharger or a turbocharger on it?"

Answer: "Clearly, this isn't the car for you." x2!

banghead

I'm actually praying for someone to come from abroad again! There's actually a motoring author in Australia who wants to feature it in a book he's writing on the complete history of the 5-Series!

I know the feeling, when I was selling my M3 I got a lot of calls from people asking if it was manual or automatic! Even the picture showing the gear lever didn't seem to stop people asking...

On a different note, does anyone have a list of the different interior colours available on the E28? Mine's an olive green colour, not sure what it's called exactly, and am looking for a replacement carpet for it...

Cheers!

Sounds like 'PINIENGRUEN' or 'Pine Green' in English

Oh dear, another website that will suck up my life!

As I have yet to source myself a Haynes manual or similar, is it possible to replace the parcel shelf? An enthusiastic previous owner cut some speaker holes in the original one, so would like to replace if possible, if not recover.

Yes, as Mustard said the colour is 'Pine Green' Code 0261 according to the brochure I have.

Yes, the parcel shelf is easy to replace. Find out from the dealer how much a new one is from BMW Mobile Tradition. As they don't seem to have a coherent pricing policy sometimes things turn out to be not as expensive as one might anticipate and one gets a pleasant surprise!

Derin... Dumb question, but whats this 'BMW Mobile Tradition' all about, is it different to ordering normally with a Main Dealer?

No Mustard...it's no different. It's just a sub-section of BMW if you like that they have set-up in Germany to hold and deal with all the stuff related to the much older cars. I think they may also be in charge of things like running the BMW Museum etc.

For example the trim piece I needed next to the driver's seat had to come to my local dealer via them in Germany. Made no diference to the delivery time and the part wasn't expensive either. Was surprised that even they didn't have the 'horse-hair' type mats left in Pacific Blue but forunately I managed to get a very good secondhand set.

Click on where it says 'video version'...then next screen on the Isetta.

Very handy site - a bit clunky to use, but a good resource to have!

Oh Jesus!!!

idea If you can't source a green carpet maybe you could get a different colour one secondhand in a contrasting colour? Maybe black or grey with overmats? Just an idea?
