Dislike BMWs? Oh, that would be why I've owned nothing else for the last nineteen years?

I absolute bloody LOVE BMWs - which is WHY I've given the F10/F11 a hard time - because it is so very far removed from what I consider to be the essence of BMW. Now, my E39 is a great deal bigger and half a ton heavier than my E30, it has 50% more cylinders in its engine and it isn't as agile nor as inclined to spin, thanks to the modern multi-link arrangement in place of the E30's semi flailing arm rear end, but I can still feel the E30 DNA when I drive it hard - DNA going back to the original Neue Klasse saloons of the mid 1960s. I'd heard that the E60/61 was a more focussed driver's car than the E39, so I had hoped BMW were continuing to build genuinely sporting saloons and estates - but a month spent in an F11 showed that this is no longer the case. There was no agility whatsoever, it's more the size of an E38 7-series than an E39 5-series and the total absence of steering feel made it impossible to drive with any confidence.
No one is listening, so stop the clap trap, this is about appreciating posters BMW's not blithering on about why anything you haven't got is crap.

It isn't about that at all. There are certain cars around today which I would very much like to have and are not out of reach on a sensible budget. I just found the F11 to fall so far short of the two-generations-older E39 in so many ways. Nice M3, by the way. It's just such a damn shame they've never made an M3 Touring!

Lovely. Do like an M3! Wish I could stomach the servicing along with all other running costs a 25 year old would have to put up with!

I'm not sure running costs are age dependant wink

Insurance?

Yeah I bought a 2012 e92 320d last year when I was 24 and thats enough for me to finance and run without breaking a sweat, an M3 would have been a bit much I think. It all adds up I think the insurance was over £1k.

Mate of mine drove one a few weeks back, we have both driven M5's and 335i's and others but never an M3. He said it was awesome and the engine was insane.

Probably too heavy/bulky for the E30. Buy it and put it in an E91 Touring.

Not really, It's probably a similar weight to an M10.

Since launch I've had the use of 6 F5ers. These have included 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0 in which I've covered 60,000 miles. They have all been totally reliable and I've felt they are the very best cars I've had the privilege of driving. I know e39 was great but IMHO the F cars I've driven have evolved positively in all aspects over all the e 39s I've driven which were mainly 3.0d and 4.0 petrol.

Only my opinion and opinions are what makes this site work but I'm struggling with the e 39 thingy

It is heavier than the M10 but not by a great deal. It's certainly lighter than the M30 and I THINK it's lighter than the M20. However, bare in mind it also needs more coolant and oil which also adds some weight.
