Thats a bargain for that - nice buy. It's not a fair bit quicker than a 530i though, in pre-facelift form it's only about 4bhp more than the 530i despite more weight so it has a lower power to weight ratio.
Whatever the numbers say, I've had drives in 530s and they weren't as quick. There's not a lot in it, but it's the extra torque that really makes the difference. The 530i is perhaps quicker on winding roads due to its greater eagerness to turn in, but on sweeping A-roads, the 535i is more effortless. 200 miles in one go is not a big deal, but I'd be fairly tired at the end of that in a 530i. Also, there's no way I could get a 530i or 540i in this good nick for under six hundred quid!Martyn76 said:
Big step up from the 2004 1.9dci Scenic it has replaced! E91 330d auto, grey Dakota leather interior, 53K miles, absolutely love it!
I've used a 2003 Scenic for tip runs and thought it's boot was massive. Surely a 3er touring is smaller?Edited by Martyn76 on Wednesday 15th October 17:03
Well, I've had my six hundred quid E39 535i down to my trusty BMW specialist and it's been up on the lift. The news keeps getting better. All the expensive stuff that can go wrong in terms of suspension, bearings etc has already been done and won't need doing again for another 20 years. The rich running has cured itself through increased use (it had only been doing 2000-ish miles a year...) and the MPG is increasing. Not a spot of rust on it either. Contrary to popular opinion, the recirculating ball steering of the V8 is more precise and more feelsome than the rack'n'pinion of the six-cylinder. I drove both my E39s back to back earlier today and the 520i felt vague in comparison. That said, the six still makes a much more musical sound than the idiotic bellow of two fours nailed together with a common counterweighted crank... but that and the slight loss of pixels on the LCD are my only gripes. Oh, and to the people who put the later angel-eye headlights on earlier E39s? Don't bother! The earlier ones are MUCH more effective, particularly on full beam. Sure, the later ones look pretty, but they're nowhere near as good.

The V8 steering isn't ad good. The fact you've said all your bushes etc are new is probably why it feels better!
And the lights in later cars are better. They are clearer.
If yours are not then you may have something which is worn out or needs replacing - like the bulbs. And the lights in later cars are better. They are clearer.
E39 Xenons are not great because only the dip beam is Xenon. In the E46 Xenons are Bi-Xenon, so there is a shutter on the dip beam that allows them to be main beam too. You can get third party Bi-Xenon lights for the E39, but they are very expensive as you have to replace the entire light. Putting decent Halogen bulbs like NightBreakers in makes quite a difference.
Picked this up in August, 09 335i M Sport Saloon. 42,000 miles I Drive etc. Looked for a long time to find the right one and was also waying up a 330 but glad I made this choice. Power is fantastic makes overtaking up here in the Highlands a breeze. Next step is to chip or not to chip !!!

With regards to chipping/remapping, give Simon at Emaps a shout as he did my 535d and I was very pleased with his knowledge and professionalism.
He's well known throughout the BMW forums and is good value for money in my eyes.
If the car's still under warranty, I wouldn't consider a remap really.
