Nice

You gonna sell the 540i?

How would you compare the 2?

Yeah I'll sell the 540i in the New Year once everything is sorted that needs sorting on the M5.

Hard to compare as the 540i is auto. But the M5 is in a different league of fast. The ride is more sorted in the M5 too which surprised me. The M5 can waft better than the 540i, and when you ask it it can hoon far better than the 540i. The 540i is a great car, but the M5 broadens it's appeal and nails it at both ends of the spectrum like no other car I've driven.

I've been thinking about an e39 for a while. I've already got my fun car so want something a bit more civilised. I've not given up on life altogether so can't decide. Everyone raves about the m5 but the 540i is a good car. The only m5 I drove felt very mundane and then 3 days later lunched it's vanos. I suspect it wasn't 100% when I drove it because it didn't do anything for me.

Not mine but about time I put this up... Old Mans M6 - Sakhir orange, almost full spec (bang and olufsen stereo, full extended leather, keyless go, reverse camera, etc etc... Just no carbon brakes and not a CP car. Taken yesterday in the New Forest but it's not especially clean!

^^^^^ Lovely. Had the chance to drive one around the EVO triangle while BMWCar photographed one of my cars for a feature.

Here's my latest BMW-ish; 1997 Alpina B12 5.7 L, one of two delivered to the UK in rhd.

NICE

Some discussion - mainly by me - about the You Tube vid of an M6 struggling. Would be interested in your + Old Man's thoughts.

Not seen the video but regards to wet weather driving....

Yes, if you nail the throttle in the wet it'll spin it's wheels up. But what near-600bhp rwd car wouldn't? The Michelin Pilot Supersports offer very good grip but in the wet even in 3rd it will spin it's wheels a bit but it's relative. Use the throttle properly and don't use it as an off/on switch it's still a remarkably capable car and doubt it'd be that much slower than an RS6 but when it's dry a bit nicer.

Traction control modes are basically off, fully on or MDM (M dynamic mode) which is somewhere in between.

I've only ever driven it in MDM or on and on can be restrictive in the wet but MDM does give you slip and still can give that "oh st" moment before saves you.

So in the Video he is basically driving around in 2nd gear MDM inner city built up area and damp, leafy and cobbled streets.
